I hope the poor guy didn't hurt himself any more than he already was running the bases, because unless whatever league that is plays by a different set of rules than MLB, a pinch runner is allowed during a dead ball situation with runner advancement in the case of injury to either the batter or the runner...

MLB Rule 5.10(c)(1) states:

"If an accident to a runner is such as to prevent him from proceeding to a base to which he is entitled, as on a home run hit out of the playing field, or an award of one or more bases, a substitute runner shall be permitted to complete the play."

Here is a game between the Jays and Sox from 2005 where this happened to the runner on second, forcing the player who hit the homer to wait on the basepaths while the injured runner was cared for, then substituted for...

Yeah, but Sean Smith is 32 years old and has been plugging away in the low level minor leagues for 15 seasons. He will never have another chance to do something memorable as a baseball player. I think he rose to the occasion and made the best of it. If he had been replaced by a pinch runner, none of us would have ever heard of him.
