August Lyrically Speaking Day 19 – Theme Thursday

Welcome to the last installment of Theme Thursday for this edition of Lyrically Speaking. This one is another matching game similar to lb’s pairs games. First, identify the title and artist of each song – 1 point for each. Then match each song with one other song in 6 pairs that fit a certain overall theme. 5 points for guessing the theme correctly, and two points for each pair you correctly match, for a total of 41 possible points. There will be no krox bonus on this game, for reasons which will become perfectly clear if you get the theme correct. Good luck!

1. Interchanging mind control
Come let the, revolution takes its toll
If you could, flick the switch and open your third eye
You'd see that, we should never be afraid to die

2. Robert's got a quick hand.
He'll look around the room, he won't tell you his plan.
He's got a rolled cigarette hanging out his mouth, he's a cowboy kid.
Yeah, he found a six shooter gun in his dad's closet hidden with a box of fun things.

3. This is it, boys, this is war - what are we waiting for?
Why don't we break the rules already?
I was never one to believe the hype
Save that for the black and white
I try twice as hard and I'm half as liked,
But here they come again to jack my style

4. And your eyes are the size of the moon
You could 'cause you can so you do
We're feeling so good
just the way that we do

5. The nights are long alone
I sit alone and moan
'Cause I love you
I love you

6. But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck
And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

7. I could fill your cup
You know my river won't evaporate
This world we still appreciate
You could be my luck
Even in a hurricane of frowns

8. I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing,
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

9. And the walls kept tumbling down (oh where do we begin?)
In the city that we love (the rubble or our sins?)
Great clouds roll over the hills (oh where do we begin?)
Bringing darkness from above (the rubble or our sins?)

10. Her lips, her lips
I could kiss them all day if she'd let me
Her laugh, her laugh
She hates but I think it's so sexy

11. And the world presses in and our shorelines change
And the cycle of tides moves us in the darkness
Now the light that comes up on your distant range
From the east casts a shadow between us

12. 1, 2, 3
I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweet
For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled. -- Richard Feynman

I'm one of the lucky folks who gets an annual Boney Awards CD from T-Bone every year. The theme looks to be a match of two top or high-ranking songs from each year. I know 3 and 12 were the top songs from 2013, and 9 was from 2014, so something by Capital Cities is around. But not enough info to make more matches. Nicely done!

Theme - Da Boneys! I believe these songs were in TBone's Top 2 in each of the six years he's presented his list. I am so proud of the fact that I actually knew every song I answered and didn't have to revert back to memory of the list!

I'm not sure the matching is going to go well, but let's give it a try....

7-9 for sure, as they were #1 and 2 respectively this past year
3-2 I'm thinking go together. I know #2 was the 2011 runner up, and I think it goes with the f.u.n. song...
10-12 because I know they're both recent...

I'm pretty sure the other two songs I have are mismatches from older years, so I'll just guess for the rest....

1-5
4-8
6-11

Why don't we break the rules already?

Some Nights-fun.

4. And your eyes are the size of the moon
You could 'cause you can so you do
We're feeling so good
just the way that we do

Nine in the Afternoon-Panic at the Disco. Methinks I know the theme, but if I'm right I'm embarrassed that I can't pull number 1 out.

5. The nights are long alone
I sit alone and moan
'Cause I love you
I love you

Take Care of Yourself-Teddy Thompson. Yup, that cinches it.

6. But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck
And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

The Cave-Mumford and Sons

7. I could fill your cup
You know my river won't evaporate
This world we still appreciate
You could be my luck
Even in a hurricane of frowns

Safe and Sound-Capital Cities

8. I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing,
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

Viva La Vida-Coldplay

9. And the walls kept tumbling down (oh where do we begin?)
In the city that we love (the rubble or our sins?)
Great clouds roll over the hills (oh where do we begin?)
Bringing darkness from above (the rubble or our sins?)

Pompeii-Bastille

10. Her lips, her lips
I could kiss them all day if she'd let me
Her laugh, her laugh
She hates but I think it's so sexy

Just The Way You Are-Bruno Mars

11. And the world presses in and our shorelines change
And the cycle of tides moves us in the darkness
Now the light that comes up on your distant range
From the east casts a shadow between us

Continents Drift-Bruce Hornsby

12. 1, 2, 3
I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweet

Ho Hey-Lumineers

OK, the easy part is the theme...these are the number one and number two songs in each year of my annual Boney Awards. As such, I really should be given no more than half credit of my score for this game, as it gives me a substantial unfair advantage.

Now then, the matching part may not be so simple. I'll start with the easiest first. I may get in trouble as I go back further in time. Let's see:

2013...7 and 9
2012...3 and 12
2011...6 and 2
2010...5 and 10
2009...11 and 1 (whatever it is  ) This has got to be it, as Hornsby had the number 1 song AND album, so by process of elimination, the one I'm drawing a blank on HAS to go here....I hope......
2008...8 and 4. This has got to be it, as I recall that Coldplay had the number 1 song and number 2 album, and Panic had the number 2 song and number 1 album.

Theme and pairs: Wow. Only recognize the lyrics to four of these songs. I know I submitted 3 and 12 for Krox points this month, but I do not recall seeing the other two submitted by anyone else. Nothing else to go on, though, so Krox songs submitted by LS players will be my guess, and 3/12 the only pair I can come up with...

Theme: Boneys Top 2 from the previous 6 years. Mr. Bone, your annual awards have added numerous songs and artists to my playlists. Considering that I listened to almost no "new" music through most of the 90s and 00s, that's a pretty great thing. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

When I came up with the idea for this theme, I considered just messaging TBone and asking him to sit out the day, in exchange for a perfect score, since there's a sort of precedent for that from other editions of LS. But then I thought, considering the running joke of TBone guessing just about every song correctly but not getting the theme in lb's games, why not just keep quiet this time? And remembering years to pair up songs, as we all discovered, is not easy. As it was, he only beat estonut by 2 points. So I have no guilt about the Whose Line points, anyway. My apologies to those like Frank and Marley, who don't get to listen to much modern music. If you ever do decide to give it a try, you could do much worse than TBone's lists, though. And most of them are available to listen to for free on Youtube...
