Great start to the season
Mark Ellis of Oakland goes yard on Dice-K of Boston.
Hoping for a constitutional crisis in Red Sox Nation.

I am about 25% sure of this.

It means that the Oakland player hit a home run against the Boston pitcher, who is Japanese and pitching for the first time since he signed a huge contract with the Red Sox.MarleysGh0st wrote:I don't know who either of these people are and I don't really care.
But what does "going yard on" mean?

Thanks to Bud Selig and the other idiots of Major League Baseball's PTB, the season opens today. In Tokyo. Red Sox vs. A's. A's are the "home" team. Even dumber is the fact that they play two games (today and tomorrow), then come home and play more exhibition games before they play again for real.MarleysGh0st wrote:I don't know who either of these people are and I don't really care.

The evil Dice-K (Daisuke Matsusaka) showed up for the first two innings, and gave up a home run to Ellis, then walked or hit the ballpark to give up another run without a hit before settling down. 95 pitches in five full innings.
Currently tied 4-4 in the top of the ninth. Not exactly scintillating play on either side (defense for A's, offense for Crimson Hose). It's early.
Side note: the same furniture store that gave away all that stuff last year because the Red Sox won the World Series is running another promotion. Stiffer odds this time out, though. The Sox have to win the Series in a sweep before they pay out. The insurance company must have balked (pun intended) at doing the exact same promotion.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Not to grouse too much or anything, but this seems ridiculous to me. Counting these games in the standings is absurd, especially since both teams are going to go back and play more exhibition games before the "real" start of the season. I'm of the opinion that baseball should retain its tradition of opening the season with the Reds playing, as befits the oldest franchise in MLB. If TPTB want to throw in an AL game, let it be later in the day.gsabc wrote:Red Sox announcers were saying that this is intended as a rebuilding year for the A's. It showed.
And the Red Sox start pulling away from the rest of the division ...

I agree, but we don't get a vote. At least playing major league baseball in Japan makes more sense than playing NFL football in England.earendel wrote:Not to grouse too much or anything, but this seems ridiculous to me. I think it's more like Congressional junkets, an excuse to take a "working" vacation in a foreign country at someone else's expense.

I am thinking it is baseball related and given I care very little, I am not goint to look it up.
So.... shut your pie hole.

I don't object to playing in Japan. I don't object to having teams start the season there. I object to the counting of these games as "regular season" even though there will be more exhibition games later. It gives these teams an unfair advantage, it seems to me.gsabc wrote:I agree, but we don't get a vote. Fortunately, I already asked for a clarification of "going yard on" and received an answer, in far more detail than it seems possible for those three little words.peacock2121 wrote:These words are all English words. Now, I understand what a "constitutional crisis" means in political terms but I'm not quite sure how to transfer than to a sports team setting. I suppose I was remiss in not asking for clarification on that, but someone will volunteer to explain now, I'm sure.
P.S. I bet beedums would find some access to a computer if he realized Bob was taking his place!

"Going yard" means "hit a home run"- period. Ear added some extraneous stuff.MarleysGh0st wrote:Fortunately, I already asked for a clarification of "going yard on" and received an answer, in far more detail than it seems possible for those three little words.peacock2121 wrote:These words are all English words. As for "consitutional crisis", all that means is that Nitrah is a Yankees' fan.
Yankees' fans hate the Red Sox- Nitrah was just wishing ill fortune to them in a tongue-in-cheek manner.
Make sense now?

I actually got the "going yard" part, aside from all the kidding. I still don't get why nitrah reached for the "constitutional crisis" phrase, but I guess the Yankess/Bosox rivalry has been going on for so long that they've used up all the more logical curses.
