Okay, so Murphy has some pity in him
turns out that it wasn't the tranny. it was " a little clamp that popped off the tranny/gear connection.

Woo Woo! In my case, about a year or two ago, it was the trannie, which is hard, in a stick shift. But we do still have them. Signalled by a car that suddenly refused to go in reverse. Then rebuilt trannie #1 they put in turned out not to have a 4th gear (I have a 5-speed, or am supposed to; 6, if you include reverse!) (they did find this out before they gave me back the car).
