R.I.P. Don Pardo, 96

Don was a great guy. I met him late one night at the 2007 Game Show Congress with a few other folks who encountered him in the hotel lobby. He kept everyone entertained with stories for two or three hours.

I met Don around 1967, when I watched a taping of Jeopardy! I still remember how nice he was. And he kept announcing long after his "retirement." RIP.

Until his death, all three regular J! announcers were still alive. John Harlan of 1978 J! and Johnny Gilbert of course are still with us.

I'm sure Don's death hit Zach especially hard since he didn't get a chance to deprive Don of his RIP.

Darrell Hammond, who did a great Bill Clinton impression (and played Sean Connery on Celebrity Jeopardy), has been named to replace Pardo as announcer. Apparently, he subbed for Pardo on a few occasions in recent years when Pardo couldn't do the show for health reasons.

I saw on the 10:00 news last night that he had moved here some years ago. NBC gave him a lifetime contract and flew him to New York every Friday night and back on Sunday during the SNL season.
