Now It Can Be Told - 2008 a J! Odyssey

#1 Post by trevor_macfee » Tue Mar 25, 2008 8:19 am

I was absolutely prohibited from posting on any message boards about this, but now that the taping is over I am free to share. I taped on Jeopardy! last week.

The unusual thing is that I hadn't auditioned since May of 2006. I got the Call in February, so there were almost 20 months from audition to call. So - those of you floating in the pool from 2006/07 - don't give up yet!

It's all still a blur because the Call was so out of the blue - I was just hoping I'd sneaked above 35 on this last online test and would get an audition. When Maggie called to invite me on the show I about fell over. I even asked my daughter to pinch me.

The whole experience last week was a blast - my wife and 11-year old daughter went out with me and we went to Disney on Monday before the Tuesday tape date (thanks to all who responded to my request for SoCal information a couple weeks ago). The J! staff is AWESOME and made the time at the studio an absolute joy.

Of course I can't divulge the results, but you can see me for the first or last time on Monday, June 16. I'll be the bald pastor at the middle podium.

I know some folks got frustrated with me when I posted this after I was on WWTBAM, but I'll say it again - don't give up! Keep after your dreams - game show or otherwise. They turned me down once for J! (and 4 times for WWTBAM) before I got on.

I'll be happy to answer any questions anyone has about the process.

Trevor, this is great! I'm so happy that you got this opportunity.

I hope the game play went well, of course, but we all know that the biggest prize is the chance to stand at a podium.

Congratulations, trevor - glad to hear that another BB is going to be behind one of the J! podia. That your call came from your previous audition and not as a result of the most recent online test isn't surprising since the pool goes for 18 months. It would have been nice if they had called you before you had to go through the worry about the latest online test, but, hey, you made it.

Kewl! Congratulations and retroactive good luck. You are now entered in my main calendar on June 16.

Channeling Obama, I say keep hope alive.
J! has cast me into the dustbin of history 4 (5? Who's counting?) times now (although I think they were calling me to ask me on the show when they learned I was DQd by having appeared on WWTBAM 6 months before (who had also rejected me twice before))
I figure I'll just keep chuggin along. They are the blind squirrel. I am the nut (in all senses of the word).

Trevor this is a cool story.

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chilliest land
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

I don't equate that expression with Obama. If anything, it reminds me of Jesse Jackson.

You're definitely right that the precise phrase is best attributed to Jesse Jackson, but he is yesterday's news. Incidentally, did you ever see Jesse Jackson reading of Green Eggs and Ham on Saturday Night Live about a hundred years ago? I'm not sure I have ever enjoyed anything more or laughed as hard. Genius in concept. Genius in delivery. Wonder if it is out there somewhere in the video ether.

Thank you for posting that link! What fun to watch it again after all these years. I remember seeing it when it was on the first time - any idea what year that was? No matter how you feel about Jesse Jackson, the whole concept and execution is hilarious.

"In a tribute four days after Dr. Seuss's death, the Rev. Jesse Jackson read Green Eggs and Ham during the 1991 season premiere of Saturday Night Live. During a later season of SNL, Darrell Hammond, who was known for impersonating Jackson, read Green Eggs and Ham during a segment of Weekend Update as Jackson."

Congratulations on making it to Jeopardy! I'm glad you had a good experience. You haven't specifically stated that you're not still the reigning champion, so if that's the case, good luck at the next taping.

Since you taped last Tuesday, it appears that you may have done so with Brad Rutter, Ken Jennings, and Bob Harris watching from the audience. That's what Ken wrote in his blog recently. Did you meet them?

Yes! In fact, that was definitely a highlight. I have described to folks that for somone really into J! having Jennings, Rutter, and Harris watching was like a golfer playing with Nicklaus, Woods, and maybe Trevino watching.

After the taping was over, I was the ultimate J! nerd and got their autographs outside the studio. My daughter did as well - she was thrilled that Ken Jennings signed his "To a future Jeopardy! champion."

So when you went to Disneyland, did you visit California Adventure, too? :)
