August Lyrically Speaking Day 1: 30 day song challenge pt 1

#1 Post by mrkelley23 » Mon Aug 04, 2014 7:15 am

Lyrically Speaking August 2014, Day 1 Thirty Day Song Challenge, part 1

A couple of years ago, I took part in this Facebook thing that they called the 30 day song challenge. It probably revealed more about me than it should, which is pretty much what Facebook is all about, right? Anyway, I’m reproducing it here for your participation. I have updated my answers to the first 10 days with what would be my current choices, and included partial lyrics to them. Your job is to guess the title and artist of these 10 songs. I’ve included the challenge prompts, so that you can play along for bonus points, if you like. 1 point for each title and artist you identify correctly, plus 1 bonus point for each answer you give for your own song challenge.

Day 1: Your favorite song: Since this still changes almost daily, it's a little silly to try to pin it down. But this one has been in my personal top ten for so long that it's an easy pick:

1. I met a cheerleader, was a real young bleeder
All the times I can reminisce
Cause the best thing in lovin'
With her sister and her cousin
Always started with a little kiss

Day 2: A song you hate I don't "hate" songs, but there are a select few which will cause me to change the channel if they come on. Here's one.

2. I hopped off the plane at L.A.X. With a dream and my cardigan. Welcome to the land of fame excess (whoa), am I gonna fit in? Jumped in the cab here I am for

Day 3: A song that makes you happy

3. It might seem crazy wearing stripes with plaid I Instagram every meal I've had All my used liquor bottles are on display

Day 4: A song that makes you sad

4. I know your life
On Earth was troubled
And only you could know the pain
You weren't afraid to face the devil
You're no stranger to the rain

Day 5: A song that reminds you of someone

5. Never Before..
did I know
How loving someone could be
Now I can see
You and Me
For a lifetime

Day 6: A song that reminds you of somewhere If you know this one, three guesses what the somewhere is it reminds me of. And the first two don't count. :)

6. So let it rock
Let it roll
Let the Bible belt come
And save my soul
Holdin’ on to 16 as long as you can
Changes come around real soon make us women and men

Day 7: A song that reminds you of an event.

7. Buddy you're an old man poor man
Pleadin' with your eyes gonna make
You some peace some day
You got mud on your face

Day 8: A song that you know all the words to

8. Mahavishnu, Fujiyama, Kama Sutra, rama-lama
Richard Perry, Spector, Barry, Rogers-Hart, Nilsson, Harry

Day 9: A song you can dance to Kind of cheating here. But since I can't dance...

9. ‘Dja ever take and try to give an ironclad leave to yourself from a three-rail billiard shot? But just as I say it takes judgment, brains and maturity to play in a balk-line game I say that any boob can take and shove a ball in a pocket.

Day 10: A song that makes you fall asleep Also kind of cheating. But since music doesn't put me to sleep -- quite the opposite, in fact...

10. Didn't I swear
There would be no complications
Didn't you want
Someone who's seen it all before

Now that you're here
It's not the same situation
Suddenly I don't remember the rules anymore
For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled. -- Richard Feynman

Spoiler
This must be where one of my blog followers got the idea for a similar song challenge back in May. I didn't participate, but it was interesting to see what some of my other friends came up with....

Day 1: Your favorite song: Since this still changes almost daily, it's a little silly to try to pin it down. But this one has been in my personal top ten for so long that it's an easy pick:

1. I met a cheerleader, was a real young bleeder
All the times I can reminisce
Cause the best thing in lovin'
With her sister and her cousin
Always started with a little kiss
Walk This Way - Aerosmith

LB's pick: Don't Pay The Ferryman - Chris DeBurgh (Just throwing one out I really love)

Jumped in the cab here I am for
Party in the USA - Miley Cyrus (LOL! This is the only Miley song I like... and I actually LOVE it. Though Weird Al may have topped it when I first heard his "Party At The CIA"...)

LB's pick: Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes

Day 3: A song that makes you happy

3. It might seem crazy wearing stripes with plaid I Instagram every meal I've had All my used liquor bottles are on display
Happy - Pharrell Williams

LB's pick: Steal My Sunshine - Len

Day 4: A song that makes you sad

4. I know your life
On Earth was troubled
And only you could know the pain
You weren't afraid to face the devil
You're no stranger to the rain

LB's pick: Too Much Heaven - Bee Gees (This was the old "Saturday night song" from back in 2008 when there was no muzak to listen to before midnight other than that one song that would always start playing at 11:00. I still sigh and think it's another Saturday night at Mecca every single time I hear that song start up to this day...)

Day 5: A song that reminds you of someone

5. Never Before..
did I know
How loving someone could be
Now I can see
You and Me
For a lifetime

LB's pick: Valerie - Steve Winwood (Anyone who thought I'd pick anything else doesn't pay much attention...)

Day 6: A song that reminds you of somewhere If you know this one, three guesses what the somewhere is it reminds me of. And the first two don't count. :)

6. So let it rock
Let it roll
Let the Bible belt come
And save my soul
Holdin’ on to 16 as long as you can
Changes come around real soon make us women and men
Jack & Diane - John Cougar Mellencamp (Gotta be the Tastee Freeze, or however it's spelled... I think you may have been the one to correct that once when I used this song)

LB's pick: Gold - John Stewart (This was very difficult for me to pick just one, because I am constantly associating music with places I've heard it, and the stupidest places to boot. I chose this song because plain as day I can still remember it was playing on the muzak at the Amoco station my family stopped at off of I-70 Exit 12 in Independence, MO during the late night hours of June 6, 1996. It was the first time I'd heard the song since I was a kid, and I believe it was several years later before I'd ever heard it again.)

Day 7: A song that reminds you of an event.

7. Buddy you're an old man poor man
Pleadin' with your eyes gonna make
You some peace some day
You got mud on your face
We Will Rock You - Queen

LB's pick: Drops of Jupiter - Train (For reasons even I can't explain, this song has always reminded me of my WWTBAM adventure)

Day 8: A song that you know all the words to

8. Mahavishnu, Fujiyama, Kama Sutra, rama-lama
Richard Perry, Spector, Barry, Rogers-Hart, Nilsson, Harry
Life Is A Rock??? - Whoever did that song (It also kinda fits the lyrical pattern of that "Oooh I need you, I don't know if I need you, but ooh I'm trying out find out" song that made the new Mecca CD)

LB's pick: Tequila - Champs (I wish this were a joke, but I am so bad at paying attention to and/or understanding lyrics that a song with only one word repeated in it is about my only sure bet!)

LB's pick: Livin It Up (Friday Night) - Bell & James (I can't dance either, but disco makes me want to get up and move, and this is my favorite lost disco hit)

Day 10: A song that makes you fall asleep Also kind of cheating. But since music doesn't put me to sleep -- quite the opposite, in fact...

10. Didn't I swear
There would be no complications
Didn't you want
Someone who's seen it all before

Now that you're here
It's not the same situation
Suddenly I don't remember the rules anymore

LB's pick: All Of Me - John Legend (Gotta pick something recent in this challenge... and this song is pure, unadulturated blechness...)

My fave is Beginnings by Chicago or Way of the World, Earth, Wind and Fire, or Baker Street, Gerry Rafferty, or...

I Wish I’da Waited to Jump Off of That Plane til It Landed, by Smashing Cerebrums

I hate that commercial for a local Toyota place where some unknown chickie does an acapella version of some fake skat that sounds like shit and I have to turn the radio off. That one.

Day 3: A song that makes you happy

3. It might seem crazy wearing stripes with plaid I Instagram every meal I've had All my used liquor bottles are on display

Romper Room Hijinks, by Vienna Boys Choir

You know what that reminds you of! It’s the portal of hell itself, and eternal damnation, that that rock and roll is leading you to! Like that.

Tahitian music, which has a particular sound, though I can’t remember a title; reminds me of Tahiti. Now THAT is profound.

My pick: Good Vibrations, Beach Boys

Day 2: A song you hate I don't "hate" songs, but there are a select few which will cause me to change the channel if they come on. Here's one.

2. I hopped off the plane at L.A.X. With a dream and my cardigan. Welcome to the land of fame excess (whoa), am I gonna fit in? Jumped in the cab here I am for

My pick: Take my breath away, Jessica Simpson

Day 3: A song that makes you happy

3. It might seem crazy wearing stripes with plaid I Instagram every meal I've had All my used liquor bottles are on display

My pick: You wear it well, Rod Stewart

Day 4: A song that makes you sad

4. I know your life
On Earth was troubled
And only you could know the pain
You weren't afraid to face the devil
You're no stranger to the rain

My pick: Lyin Eyes, Eagles

Day 5: A song that reminds you of someone

5. Never Before..
did I know
How loving someone could be
Now I can see
You and Me
For a lifetime

My pick: Rocky Mountain High, John Denver

Day 6: A song that reminds you of somewhere If you know this one, three guesses what the somewhere is it reminds me of. And the first two don't count. :)

6. So let it rock
Let it roll
Let the Bible belt come
And save my soul
Holdin’ on to 16 as long as you can
Changes come around real soon make us women and men

Jack and Diane, John Mellencamp

My pick: Surfin USA, Beach Boys

Day 7: A song that reminds you of an event.

7. Buddy you're an old man poor man
Pleadin' with your eyes gonna make
You some peace some day
You got mud on your face
You big disgrace
Kickin you can all over the place

We will rock you, Queen

My pick: Abraham, Martin, and John, Marvin Gaye

Day 8: A song that you know all the words to

8. Mahavishnu, Fujiyama, Kama Sutra, rama-lama
Richard Perry, Spector, Barry, Rogers-Hart, Nilsson, Harry

My pick: Baker Street, Gerry Rafferty

Day 9: A song you can dance to Kind of cheating here. But since I can't dance...

9. ‘Dja ever take and try to give an ironclad leave to yourself from a three-rail billiard shot? But just as I say it takes judgment, brains and maturity to play in a balk-line game I say that any boob can take and shove a ball in a pocket.

My pick: Amarillo by Morning, George Strait

Day 10: A song that makes you fall asleep Also kind of cheating. But since music doesn't put me to sleep -- quite the opposite, in fact...

10. Didn't I swear
There would be no complications
Didn't you want
Someone who's seen it all before

Now that you're here
It's not the same situation
Suddenly I don't remember the rules anymore

Billy Joel

My pick: La La Lu, Peggy Lee
-- In Iroquois society, leaders are encouraged to remember seven generations in the past and consider seven generations in the future when making decisions that affect the people.
-- America would be a better place if leaders would do more long-term thinking. -- Wilma Mankiller

I can get points for my own choices? Why, that would jeopardize my cellar right off the bat!

Okay, I'll offer a couple choices. First, here's my answer to your lyrics.

7. Buddy you're an old man poor man
Pleadin' with your eyes gonna make
You some peace some day
You got mud on your face

We Will Rock You

Day 1: Your favorite song:

Likewise, I can't say there's a permanent favorite, but I'll answer:

Better Days Ahead -The Elders

Day 3: A song that makes you happy

One Last Drink - Enter The Haggis

Day 4: A song that makes you sad
Day 5: A song that reminds you of someone

A twofer here. And I'll remind the audience that, while I like listening to traditional Celtic and Celtic Rock music, I don't actually have any Celtic ancestry at all. If my Viking ancestors visited Britain or Ireland, a thousand years ago, they were unwelcome guests.

However, since MarleysParents passed away (MarleysMom three years ago, tomorrow), this song always brings a tear to my eye.

Men of Erin - The Elders

Day 6: A song that reminds you of somewhere

California Girls - The Beach Boys

I had to include at least one non-Celtic answer! :P

Day 9: A song you can dance to

Moore Street Girls - The Elders

Doin' an Irish dance HEY!

?????/I Love The Nightlife-Alicia Bridges

Day 3: A song that makes you happy

3.It might seem crazy wearing stripes with plaid I Instagram every meal I've had All my used liquor bottles are on display

Sounds like Weird Al Yancovic to me. Is it "Tacky", his takeoff on "Happy"? I've heard about it, but haven't actually heard it yet/Feelin Stronger Every Day-Chicago

Day 4: A song that makes you sad

4. I know your life
On Earth was troubled
And only you could know the pain
You weren't afraid to face the devil
You're no stranger to the rain

These lyrics sound familiar but nope/Shannon-Henry Gross.

Day 5: A song that reminds you of someone

5. Never Before..
did I know
How loving someone could be
Now I can see
You and Me
For a lifetime

????/Touch Me-The Doors. Reminds me of my mom. She really liked that song, which always amused me. Every now and then she'd like something that was totally out of left field considering her usual musical taste.

Jack & Diane-John Cougar (Mellencamp)/Can't Take My Eyes Off You-Frankie Valli. Reminds me of Palisades Park. Took a family trip there when I was a kid. There was a ride we went on several times that played this and With a Girl Like You by The Troggs over and over.

Day 7: A song that reminds you of an event.

7. Buddy you're an old man poor man
Pleadin' with your eyes gonna make
You some peace some day
You got mud on your face

We Will Rock You-Queen/I Can't Help Myself-Four Tops. The event was my debut behind the microphone as a real honest to goodness radio dj--at my college radio station. It was the first song I played. My first song as a PROFESSIONAL radio dj was Try A Little Kindness by Glen Campbell (hey, it was a middle of the road station, ok?)

Day 8: A song that you know all the words to

8. Mahavishnu, Fujiyama, Kama Sutra, rama-lama
Richard Perry, Spector, Barry, Rogers-Hart, Nilsson, Harry

Life is a Rock-Reunion. Really? ALL the words? You're a better man than I, Gunga Din. Way back when, the band I was in used to do Life During Wartime by Talking Heads, which had a boatload of words, but I doubt I could come up with a quarter of them now. So let's go with something by the Beatles. In fact, let's actually go WITH "Something" by the Beatles/

Trouble-Robert Preston/Any guy back when I was in school slow danced more than once to Colour My World by Chicago

Day 10: A song that makes you fall asleep Also kind of cheating. But since music doesn't put me to sleep -- quite the opposite, in fact...

10. Didn't I swear
There would be no complications
Didn't you want
Someone who's seen it all before

Now that you're here
It's not the same situation
Suddenly I don't remember the rules anymore

This Night-Billy Joel/Anything from Tales From the Topographic Oceans by Yes. I NEVER got through that album without nodding off. NEVER. And I like Yes a lot. Just not that album.

Walk This Way - Aerosmith
(One of) Mine: In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel

Day 2: A song you hate I don't "hate" songs, but there are a select few which will cause me to change the channel if they come on. Here's one.

2. I hopped off the plane at L.A.X. With a dream and my cardigan. Welcome to the land of fame excess (whoa), am I gonna fit in? Jumped in the cab here I am for

Party in the U.S.A. - Miley Cyrus
Mine: My Heart Will Go On - Céline Dion

Day 3: A song that makes you happy

3. It might seem crazy wearing stripes with plaid I Instagram every meal I've had All my used liquor bottles are on display

Tacky - Weird Al
Mine: Under the Boardwalk - The Drifters

Day 4: A song that makes you sad

4. I know your life
On Earth was troubled
And only you could know the pain
You weren't afraid to face the devil
You're no stranger to the rain

Dunno
Mine: No More Looking Back - The Kinks

Day 5: A song that reminds you of someone

5. Never Before..
did I know
How loving someone could be
Now I can see
You and Me
For a lifetime

Dunno
Mine: I Got You - Split Enz

Day 6: A song that reminds you of somewhere If you know this one, three guesses what the somewhere is it reminds me of. And the first two don't count. :)

6. So let it rock
Let it roll
Let the Bible belt come
And save my soul
Holdin’ on to 16 as long as you can
Changes come around real soon make us women and men

Jack and Diane - John Cougar Mellencamp - Indiana generally or Tastee Freez specifically
Mine: Breakaway - Big Pig

Day 7: A song that reminds you of an event.

7. Buddy you're an old man poor man
Pleadin' with your eyes gonna make
You some peace some day
You got mud on your face

We Will Rock You - Queen
Tie Your Mother Down - Queen

Day 8: A song that you know all the words to

8. Mahavishnu, Fujiyama, Kama Sutra, rama-lama
Richard Perry, Spector, Barry, Rogers-Hart, Nilsson, Harry

Life Is a Rock - Reunion
Mine: Tons - anything I bought on LP BitD that had lyrics - Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull

Dunno
Mine: Dead Man's Party - Oingo Boingo

Day 10: A song that makes you fall asleep Also kind of cheating. But since music doesn't put me to sleep -- quite the opposite, in fact...

10. Didn't I swear
There would be no complications
Didn't you want
Someone who's seen it all before

Now that you're here
It's not the same situation
Suddenly I don't remember the rules anymore

This Night - Billy Joel
Mine: Music doesn't put me to sleep, either, but I could enjoy trying to fall asleep to something in this series, like - Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of Muse

Day 1: Your favorite song: Since this still changes almost daily, it's a little silly to try to pin it down. But this one has been in my personal top ten for so long that it's an easy pick:

1. I met a cheerleader, was a real young bleeder
All the times I can reminisce
Cause the best thing in lovin'
With her sister and her cousin
Always started with a little kiss

"Walk This Way" - Aerosmith

MY CHOICE: My favorite is still "Smooth" by Santana featuring Rob Thomas

Day 2: A song you hate I don't "hate" songs, but there are a select few which will cause me to change the channel if they come on. Here's one.

2. I hopped off the plane at L.A.X. With a dream and my cardigan. Welcome to the land of fame excess (whoa), am I gonna fit in? Jumped in the cab here I am for

"Party in the USA" - Miley Cyrus

MY CHOICE: I cringe every time the DJs play "Hey There Delilah" - The Plain White T's

Day 3: A song that makes you happy

3. It might seem crazy wearing stripes with plaid I Instagram every meal I've had All my used liquor bottles are on display

"Tacky" - Weird Al Yankovic

MY CHOICE: Who doesn't find themselves just a little happier when they hear "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen?

Day 4: A song that makes you sad

4. I know your life
On Earth was troubled
And only you could know the pain
You weren't afraid to face the devil
You're no stranger to the rain

MY CHOICE: Similarly, who doesn't get a bit saddened by "Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin?

Day 5: A song that reminds you of someone

5. Never Before..
did I know
How loving someone could be
Now I can see
You and Me
For a lifetime

MY CHOICE: "True Love" by Glenn Frey

Day 6: A song that reminds you of somewhere If you know this one, three guesses what the somewhere is it reminds me of. And the first two don't count. :)

6. So let it rock
Let it roll
Let the Bible belt come
And save my soul
Holdin’ on to 16 as long as you can
Changes come around real soon make us women and men

"Jack & Diane" - John Cougar (well, he was still going by that name when he recorded this one anyway)

MY CHOICE: "We Need A Little Christmas" - Johnny Mathis (At least in this area, this song [by any artist] gets very little airplay. About the only time I consistently hear it over the holidays is during the airing of the Disney Christmas parades. So naturally I think of Walt Disney World whenever I do hear it.)

Day 7: A song that reminds you of an event.

7. Buddy you're an old man poor man
Pleadin' with your eyes gonna make
You some peace some day
You got mud on your face

"We Will Rock You" - Queen

MY CHOICE: Maybe this one is too clearly linked to the event, but I'll go with "Run for the Roses" by Dan Fogelberg.

Day 8: A song that you know all the words to

8. Mahavishnu, Fujiyama, Kama Sutra, rama-lama
Richard Perry, Spector, Barry, Rogers-Hart, Nilsson, Harry

MY CHOICE: "Don't Let Me Get Me" - P!nk

Day 9: A song you can dance to Kind of cheating here. But since I can't dance...

9. ‘Dja ever take and try to give an ironclad leave to yourself from a three-rail billiard shot? But just as I say it takes judgment, brains and maturity to play in a balk-line game I say that any boob can take and shove a ball in a pocket.

MY CHOICE: "Just Dance" - Lady Gaga

Day 10: A song that makes you fall asleep Also kind of cheating. But since music doesn't put me to sleep -- quite the opposite, in fact...

10. Didn't I swear
There would be no complications
Didn't you want
Someone who's seen it all before

Now that you're here
It's not the same situation
Suddenly I don't remember the rules anymore

MY CHOICE: "Greatest Love of All" - Whitney Houston
President, Big Taste Nation

LS August Day 1 Answers and points

1. Walk this Way – Aerosmith. Still brings out my inner teenage boy. Which isn’t all that inner, sometimes.

2. Party in the USA – Miley Cyrus. Really, anything by Miley Cyrus. This was just the first title that popped into my head. She sounds like a diseased Canada goose without autotune.

3. Tacky – Weird Al Yankovic. This whole new album makes me happy. Actually, the Pharrell Williams song makes me happy, too. Just decided to throw one little curve with this one.

4. Go Rest High on That Mountain – Vince Gill. Written for his brother’s funeral. I sang it for my brother-in-law’s funeral.

5. I’ll Still be Loving You – Restless Heart. Okay, it’s a 25-year-old song, but geez, I didn’t expect so many people to not know it, since it was a crossover that got tons of airplay on both pop and country charts. The lyrics are framed in jade and hanging on the wall in our house. It was my first anniversary gift to Wendy.

6. Jack and Diane – John Mellencamp. Definitely Indiana, and definitely the Tastee Freez, but mostly Bloomington. All the videos and many of the song settings (including the Tastee Freez) are from Bloomington and Seymour, Indiana.

7. We Will Rock You – Queen. 1978 basketball sectional championships. The song was still relatively new, and just beginning to be played as a pump-up song at athletic contests. I can still feel the bleachers shaking.

8. Life is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me) – Reunion. Recorded it off the radio onto cassette, then spent countless hours playing, writing, and rewinding. So it’s been a gimmick for years. Since I recorded it off the radio, though, I never got the last few stanzas (because the stupid DJ was always talking over them while he faded it out) until the advent of Youtube.

9. Ya Got Trouble – The Music Man (Robert Preston). I can only dance to it because I still recall the choreography I was given to do during the song. Like I said, cheating.

10. This Night – Billy Joel. Music doesn’t put me to sleep – just the opposite. My mind can’t help but start to analyze something about it, even if it’s the breed of goose the singer resembles. But if there’s one piece of music that totally relaxes me, calms me, and soothes me, it’s the slow movement from Beethoven’s Pathetique (Sonata No. 8). Billy Joel took the melody, jazzed it up a little, and put words to it.

Ha!!1 That didn't even strike me as I wrote it. I saw Queen many times while they were still in their prime. For the "A Day at the Races" tour, we had some great seats (at the Forum) and they opened the show with this. I've seen them do most (if not all) of their big songs live, but this one OUTROCKED all the others. I've seen a LOT of concerts, and this may have been the most amazing opening number ever.
