top o' the mornin'® 7/2/2014

It's been over a week and I can't tell that the breathing machine is doing me any good. I'm still waking up several times in the night and feeling groggy when the alarm goes off. My follow-up appointment isn't until the end of this month so I'll stick with it until then.

They tested your brain waves with the mask on in the sleep lab, didn't they?

So I guess the tiny bits of sleep you are getting are better sleep than you were getting. You just can't, uh, tell. Yet.

Signed, the one in the same pickle who didn't get the mask.

As I lost weight, I was sleeping alright for a while.

Not any more.

My insurance company said that I didn't qualify for a sleep lab study. I had to settle for a home study, using a device that only measured my respiration.

Well, my insurance anted up for the sleep lab study, but my results were the same as yours; keep waking up, feeling unrested. And also feeling suffocated by the mask that didn't mask my respiration pattern; fancy lab knew about them but didn't have them. But I was told I was getting really great sleep, based on what the electrodes were saying. Couldn't tell by how I felt.

Since this was all really done so that I could have it in writing both that I have apnea & that I grind my teeth in my sleep, & that I should have either a sleep mask or an orthodontally made bite guard (since apparently my dentist's word is not good enough for my medical insurance) or both if they can be made to fit together on the same person, me, it all came to naught, as I was so uncomfortable in the mask I didn't get one to take home, & the doctor who was supposed to follow through on the physician-ordered, paid by insurance bite guard disappeared on me.

If I had bought the bite guard & it had worked back them I possibly wouldn't have needed as much dental work as I've needed in the ensuing 14 or so years. I've got to get it. My dentist insists that the ones you buy over the counter, that aren't tailored to your particular mouth can do more harm than good, & that I'd probably just chew through them in record time anyway. And since my dentist does not sell these, they send you to an orthodontist, I have to believe them. Gonna be expensive, but isn't everything.
