Eli Wallach, Multifaceted Actor, Dies at 98
Eli Wallach's most famous roles were bad guys, in movies such as The Magnificent Seven, Lord Jim, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and The Godfather: Part III and TV shows like Batman (http://wwtbambored.com/viewtopic.php?t=43147). He received an honorary Oscar in 2010. He was married for 66 years to actress Anne Jackson, and they appeared on stage together often. Game shows included To Tell the Truth, What's My Line and Password.

I'm glad they got around to giving him an Honorary Oscar. It's amazing he still gave good performances in his 90s.

About a million years ago, I saw Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson in a televised play called The Typists, read a review of it, and saw the two of them in some television interview or other. I don't remember if I read the review before or after I saw the play, but I do remember that the performances were praised, and the play itself was called something like "Joycean in its time frame." That I didn't understand until my college senior seminar when I read Joyce's Ulysses.
The interview wasn't about The Typists, it was about something no doubt far more jazzy and funny, but what really impressed me was that Anne said that working with Eli was working with "the master misery," and although it doesn't sound complimentary, something in the way she said it made it clear that she was very proud of his talent, determination, attention to detail, and focus.
Another performance I remember well was Wallach as Dr. Herbert Morrison in Nuts, a vehicle for Barbra Streisand to star in and produce. I had to look it up to find the doctor's name, and I loved the headline of the review I found: "Supporting actors upstage Streisand in Nuts." The headline isn't completely fair because Streisand was memorable as well, but I remember Wallach, Karl Malden, Maureen Stapleton, and James Whitmore as well as I do Oscar winners Streisand and Richard Dreyfuss. "He is despicable," the reviewer wrote about Morrison, and Wallach made him so.
I hope TCM does an Eli Wallach marathon soon. I'll watch as much as I can.
