Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

There will be a lot of forehead slapping on some of these sitewide stumpers.

"Make the Connection"

1. CHECK / BALANCE / BONUS / MONEY

All of these words precede "Game" in the names of pricing games on "The Price Is Right".

2. DOLLAR / PISTOL / PILSNER / ROBOT

English words derived from the Czech language.

3. ESTONIA / BELARUS / BOHEMIA / FRANCIS BACON

Piano manufacturers.

4. FLYTE TEDDY BEAR / HUDSUCKER JANITOR / SNUFFLEUPAGUS / LORAX VILLAIN

Aloysius.

5. BO & LUKE DUKE / ARTEMIS / GEENA DAVIS / MAD JACK

They're all archers.

6. 1970-84 (PORNOGRAPHY) / 1988-94 (HIP HOP) / 1927-63 (HOLLYWOOD) / REIGN OF ELIZABETH I (ENGLAND)

They've all been called "the Golden Age of _____".

7. CAERULEPUNCTUS / FAVES.COM / PATRICIA BOWMAN / VOYAGER PHOTO OF EARTH

All are associated with blue dots. Caerulepunctus is a species of fish called the blue dot triplefin. The former social networking site faves.com was known as "Blue Dot". Bowman famously testified against William Kennedy Smith while a blue dot covered her face. The Voyager 1 photo of Earth is called "the pale blue dot".

8. JILL WHELAN & JENNIFER ANISTON / JOHN TESH & KYLA PRATT / ALEX TREBEK & MARC SUMMERS / GEORGE CLOONEY & GEORGE CLOONEY

Stars of two different TV shows that shared the same title. Whelan starred on the short-lived ABC drama "Friends" long before NBC's "Friends". Tesh's talk show was called "One on One", which was better known as the title of a UPN sitcom. Trebek hosted the short-lived CBS game show "Double Dare" long before Nickelodeon's "Double Dare" was a success. Clooney starred in the short-lived CBS sitcom "E/R" years before he starred on NBC's "ER".

9.
METEOR DUE TO CUSTOMER DECLINE, ACCORDING TO SPOONER (8) /
MCENTIRE OCCUPIES STUFF, THEN STALKS THE RUNNING MAN (8) /
CAN LUCILLE BACK JIMMY GILMER? (8) /
LAB RIFLE CONFUSED BORED PASTOR (8)

I don't know if any of you do British (cryptic) crossword puzzles, but this was a clever question.

Cryptic crossword clues for "FIREBALL". For those of you who have never understood those crosswords, I will explain.

"Meteor", "stalks 'The Running Man'", "back Jimmy Gilmer", and "Bored pastor" are all definitions for "FIREBALL".
Clue A: "According to Spooner" suggests that the answer is a spoonerism. "Customer decline" could be read as "buyer fall", which can be spoonerized.
Clue B: "Occupies" suggests that one word is contained within another word. Put McEntire (Reba) in the middle of stuff (fill).
Clue C: Pretty straightforward. If you can somebody at work, you fire them. A famous Lucille is Ball.
Clue D: "Confused" suggests an anagram. Simply anagram "lab rifle".

The pictures show tri-corner, swinging, hanging, and pregnant.

Paper chads

"The Fourth Element"

1. 1980S CAR OF THE DECADE / VAN HALEN INSTRUMENTAL / STANLEY PARABLE ROOM / (e.g.) ELECTORAL COLLEGE MEMBERS

205, 316, 427, 538.

2. CRESCENT / PEACE SYMBOL / MALE/FEMALE AMALGAM / STAR OF DAVID

First four symbols in Piotr Mlodozeniec's "Coexist" bumper sticker.

3. WHY NOT ME? / OH, THE THINGS I KNOW! / LIES AND THE LYING LIARS WHO TELL THEM / THE TRUTH (WITH JOKES)

The last four books written by Al Franken in chronological order.

4. BRIAN CAPPELLETTO: 1 / DAVE WIEGAND: 2 / JOE EDLEY: 3 / NIGEL RICHARDS: 5

Increasing number of titles won by competitors of the National Scrabble Championship. Right now, nobody has won exactly four titles.

5. THE WEDDING PARTY / THE HOTEL INSPECTORS / GOURMET NIGHT / THE GERMANS

Successive titles of episodes of "Fawlty Towers". "The Germans" is perhaps the most famous episode of that show. The one where John Cleese mentions the war and goose-steps around the hotel.

6. OH! THUS BE IT EVER / AND WHERE IS THAT BAND / ON THE SHORE, DIMLY SEEN / OH, SAY CAN YOU SEE

You should have figured this question was bound to show up in the sequences round.

First words of verses 4, 3, 2, and 1 of "The Star-Spangled Banner".

7. BIRK: 46 / FITZPATRICK & WATSON: 48 / MAMULA: 49 / MCINALLY: 50

Highest scores ever recorded on the NFL's Wonderlic Test. Pat McInally retook the test years after his retirement and scored a 49. Morris Claiborne of the Dallas Cowboys has the lowest recorded score in NFL history (4 out of 50), although he claims that he BS'ed it because it had nothing to do with football.

8. UNDERWORLD / SEA / SKY / (e.g.) AGRICULTURE

This was a tricky one.

Dominions of the mythological gods Pluto, Neptune, Uranus, and Saturn. Please don't write me any letters about Pluto not being a planet. I'm pretty sure we all know that already.

9. MAJOR = 4 / COLONEL = 3 / GENERAL = 2 / _____
