The Ultimate QoD Challenge -- Week 9, Thursday

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Thu Jun 12, 2014 4:56 am

"Ten!"

Conservatives might deny the existence of today's round, but we're going to do it anyway.

"Science"

Sorry, but I was too lazy to come up with a cute science play-on words today. Below, I have ten long descriptions of various scientific units of measurement. For each one, give me the proper name that the SI gives that unit. And don't forget your bet percentage on tomorrow's "Fat Chance" science question. (I didn't forget this time.)

Answers are due by Friday 6/13 at 4 PM EDT.

1. The base unit of time
2. The base unit of length
3. The base unit of temperature
4. The base unit of electrical current
5. The base unit of amount of a chemical substance
6. The derived unit of frequency
7. The derived unit of force
8. The derived unit of magnetic field strength
9. The derived unit of electrical inductance
10. The derived unit of electrical conductance
"Fat Chance" bet: ___%

Science is not my strong point -- I never even took a physics class, and never regretted that. And my LEAST favorite category of all categories is weights and measures. But what the hell.

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Well, you never know if zachhoran might post first and spoil all of the answers. That has happened before when I hosted Lyrically Speaking.

I forgot to mention that all correct answers in "Ten!" are now worth 16 points each.

1. The base unit of time -- second

I like the official definition better: The duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the cesium-133 atom.

2. The base unit of length -- meter

3. The base unit of temperature -- kelvin

4. The base unit of electrical current -- amp(ere)

5. The base unit of amount of a chemical substance -- mole

6. The derived unit of frequency -- hertz

Expressed literally as "something per second".

7. The derived unit of force -- newton

Kilogram-meters per second squared.

8. The derived unit of magnetic field strength -- tesla

Kilograms per ampere per second squared, or something like that.

9. The derived unit of electrical inductance -- henry

Kilogram-meters squared per ampere squared per second squared.

10. The derived unit of electrical conductance -- siemens

Ampere per volt. That's a lot easier to say than "seconds cubed amperes squared per kilogram-meter squared".

Big scores today!

6/9 + 6/10 + 6/11 + 6/12 Scores (8 participants)
Bob Juch - 32 + 68 + 0 + 160 = 260
smilergrogan - 8 + 12 + 40 + 160 = 220
ShamelessWeasel - 16 + 32 + 24 + 96 = 168

My research indicates that the mho remains an acceptable alternative name to the siemens. They are identical in meaning. It appears that you marked my answer to that question wrong. Please advise. --Bob

He's right except that mho is not an SI term.
