A couple of more matches...

13. THOMAS CROMWELL can become THOMAS MORE, who was not a fan of 100. MARTIN LUTHER.

The infamous 61. MAX HARDCORE becomes MAX ROACH, who drummed with 37. CHARLES MINGUS.

My guess is that Cromwell is one of the two people who are matched with themselves since he was instrumental in the downfall of More.

42. JOHN MCCLOSKEY = JOHN LOCKE, goes with 45. JEREMY BENTHAM

82. JAMES MERRILL = JAMES I, goes with 60. CHARLES I
I think these are the two pairs Frank has in mind. He wouldn't change a small English letter "I" to become the Roman numeral "I"

Merrill more properly becomes James Mill who more closely goes with Bentham.

79. William Manchester becomes William Sherman (or even William T Sherman), who goes with 11. Phillip Sheridan.

He played Henry VIII in A Man for All Seasons, which could be a somewhat circuitous link to Thomas Cromwell.

I don't think that there are too many other famous Gustaves besides Flaubert, so he has to be a connection to a derived name. GEORGE SAND is the most obvious person to connect to Flaubert, but we have two Georges (Adamson and Richardson) through which we can get her name.
