The Ultimate QoD Challenge -- Week 5, Monday

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Mon May 05, 2014 4:56 am

Has your brain exploded yet? If not, then you're ready for the second part of the quiz that is so devious and cold-hearted, the police are currently digging up its backyard. So if I disappear without notice, it means they found the missing Jehovah's Witness.

Speaking of disappearing, our first intermission is next week, as I will be disappearing to North Carolina for a little vacation time.

"Make the Connection"

As promised, we're now playing for 2 points for each correct connection. The questions are harder, and so are my judgments.

Answers are due by Tuesday 5/6 at 4 PM EDT.

1. GENERAL MARCEAU'S BURIAL | BATTLE OF JEMAPPES | FALL OF ALEXANDRIA | BATTLE OF AUSTERLITZ
2. STATCOULOMB | MEDIEVAL LANDOWNER | COLONIAL STOVE | MEYER LAWYER
3. SAVED BY THE BELL | ELLEN | TWO GUYS AND A GIRL | THE HOGAN FAMILY
4. FOUR EMPERORS | RHONE | THULIUM | CALL RETURN
5. SIX POPES | RUBY SLIPPERS DESIGNER | 2012 NFL MVP | ROCKY'S WIFE
6. AVATAR | PULP FICTION | CITIZEN KANE | NOTORIOUS

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Indeed, these questions were harder. There were three site-wide stumpers in this batch.

1. GENERAL MARCEAU'S BURIAL | BATTLE OF JEMAPPES | FALL OF ALEXANDRIA | BATTLE OF AUSTERLITZ

Napoleon was not involved in all of these events, although you guys were in the right area. This is one of those things that you've seen hundreds of times but have never really thought about them. All of these events describe the reliefs depicted on the Arc de Triomphe.

2. STATCOULOMB | MEDIEVAL LANDOWNER | COLONIAL STOVE | MEYER LAWYER

Franklins. The last clue describes the unfunny Breckin Meyer of TV's "Franklin & Bash".

3. SAVED BY THE BELL | ELLEN | TWO GUYS AND A GIRL | THE HOGAN FAMILY

Sitcoms that changed their titles during their runs. "The Hogan Family" is the easy one, as it used to be called "Valerie" and "Valerie's Family". ABC's short-lived "Two Guys and a Girl" was once "Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place". Ellen DeGeneres' sitcom started out as "These Friends of Mine".

Now, "Saved by the Bell" is the really interesting one here. "Saved by the Bell" was originally called "Good Morning, Miss Bliss". The pilot aired on NBC primetime in the summer of 1987. The show starred Hayley Mills and featured future TV stars Jaleel White, Brian Austin Green, and Jonathan Brandis. A year later, Disney Channel picked up the show and introduced the classic cast of Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Dustin Diamond, Lark Voorhies, and Dennis Haskins. Disney canceled the show after just one season, but NBC reclaimed the series and renamed it "Saved by the Bell", where it and the later spinoffs became Saturday morning mainstays for over a decade.

4. FOUR EMPERORS | RHONE | THULIUM | CALL RETURN

Non-sexual things associated with the number 69. As smiler correctly pointed out, the year 69 A.D. had four Roman emperors. And Rhone is the 69th French department.

5. SIX POPES | RUBY SLIPPERS DESIGNER | 2012 NFL MVP | ROCKY'S WIFE

Adrians. Adrian Peterson pops up for the second time.

6. AVATAR | PULP FICTION | CITIZEN KANE | NOTORIOUS

I don't think James Cameron appeared in "Avatar", so that's wrong. What I was actually looking for here was films with a MacGuffin.

7. BLESSED ARE THE PLACEMAKERS | THESE ARE MURDERERS, COMPLAINERS | COME FORTH OUT OF THY LIONS | PRINTERS HAVE PERSECUTED ME

You had to read each of these clues carefully to spot the connection. These are actual typos that have been printed in Bibles. The correct verses should read "blessed are the peacemakers", "these are murmurers, complainers", "come forth out of thy loins", and "princes have persecuted me". Biblical printing errors are not uncommon or even recent. In 1631, two British printers were fined £300 for leaving the "not" out of the Seventh Commandment. Yes, their Bibles said "Thou shalt commit adultery".

8. ROOSEVELT, NEW YORK | BERGISH-GLADBACH, GERMANY | LEEDS, ENGLAND | TORONTO, ONTARIO

You would know the connection instantly if I told you that these cities were the birthplaces of Howard Stern, Heidi Klum, Mel B, and Howie Mandel.

Birthplaces of the current panelists of "America's Got Talent".

9. THE RESURRECTION | GREAT | NEW WORLD | CHORAL

Nicknames for composers' 9th symphonies. They belong to Rubbra, Schubert, Dvorak, and Beethoven.

10. DUESENBERG | HANG GLIDER | RMS TITANIC | BLOOD TRANSFUSION

Things that killed their inventors.

Bob J is starting his recovery after Friday's misstep. He's on top again.
