Sterling banned for life
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has banned Clipper owner Donald Sterling for life, has levied the maximum possible fine against him ($2.5 million) and urges the other owners to force him to sell the franchise. Once Silver found that the tapes were authentic, I think he had to do everything in his power to figuratively fry the guy. It looks like he did. --Bob

Yowza!
Not that he didn't have it coming, but....
EDIT: There still is an effort to have the other owners to force him to sell the team (75% of the owners would have to agree to that), and supposedly there are bidders wanting to bid up to a billion dollars for the team. Quite a markup for the team that used to be the Buffalo Braves!

If this had surfaced during those many years the Clippers languished in the basement, Sterling would have thanked them for forcing him to sell the team.

Because of TV, even some of the worst teams make money. They showed a clip of him back in the 80's when he bought the team for something like 12 million dollars. He said then, if he was offered 30 million, he wouldn't sell because he thought, even a lousy team was a money maker. I wonder if he gets what the team is worth on paper, or he gets less/more.

As we know from Ozzie and Daniel Silna, some folks who don't even have a team make money off of TV.rayxtwo wrote:Because of TV, even some of the worst teams make money.

I used to go to a lot of the Sprits games when they were around. You could get tickets for $1.00 and sit where ever you wanted. I was at the "Ball Day" promotion and it was a mess. After the game was over and we were leaving, some guy stole a ball from a little kid and took off running. A guy saw what happened and as the thief was running past him, he stuck out his leg and tripped him. The guy had some major damage some to his face because he did a swan dive on the asphalt. The guy picked up the ball and gave it back to the little kid. Here's the ESPN "30 for 30" show they did about the team.

Too bad Sterling can't rap. Then it would be O.K., even get invited to the White House, for being racist. But white guys can't rap, as racist as that sound.

So is the supposed girlfriend still a girlfriend?
That part so confuses me.
Racist but his girlfriend is black/hispanic.
And is she the one that made the tape public?

True about the team swap -- it was the same reason for the Baltimore Colts - LA Rams swap, IIRC: avoiding taxes (estate taxes, I believe).Buffacuse wrote:Spiffster: Actually, they used to be the Boston Celtics...after John Y. Let's call the 'girlfriend' what she is...a whore. If we are calling Sterling a racist for private comments between him and his whore the certainly we can call her a whore.earendel wrote:And what about his wife - how does she fit in to all this?christie1111 wrote:So is the supposed girlfriend still a girlfriend?

What I don't understand is how Charles Barkley, who comments "...That's why I hate white people." can continue to associate with the NBA, and even be asked his opinions on the Sterling comments. Or why Jay-Z who writes, says, and sells his words and still gets to sit courtside.

It's a real shame that ingrained institutional black racism has kept BiT from achieving his life's goal of being invited to the Obama White House.BackInTex wrote:Too bad Sterling can't rap. Re: Sterling banned for life
In some ways, the scandal surrounding Clippers owner Donald Sterling over his alleged racially charged comments has its roots in a legal battle between his female friend, V. Stiviano, and his wife, Rochelle Sterling.
Here is a rundown:
What is the legal action about?
Nearly 50 years Sterling's junior, Stiviano was sued last month by Sterling's wife, Rochelle, who seeks the return of her $1.8-million L.A. duplex as well as a Ferrari, two Bentleys and a Range Rover she said her husband bought for Stiviano.

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

It’s a real shame you can't see (or more likely admit) the hypocrisy of the situation. Probably because you are scared of being called a name.silverscreenselect wrote: It's a real shame that ingrained institutional black racism has kept BiT from achieving his life's goal of being invited to the Obama White House.

Submitted for your consideration in such matters, one Strom Thurmond. His career speaks for itself. Just for the record (oh why am I getting into this) the girlfriend is a girlfriend, not a whore. A whore sells their sexual services for money. Just to define things here. Though you know that. There's no record, I don't think, of this girlfriend exacting a price for her services. If her boyfriend, who happens to be married, which makes him an adulterer, by definition, gives her stuff, so be it.

LOL - if you've seen photos of him, and you've seen photos of her, you'd know there was most definitely a 'price' for services rendered.

About 10 years ago I represented a company that sold diamond blades (tools for cutting concrete) around the country, typically by phone. I needed a declaration from the company's president. That's when I learned that, although the documents identified him as a "Phillips," his surname was actually "Nussbaum."BackInTex wrote:Too bad Sterling can't rap. Curious, I asked him about it. He told me that in certain parts of the country, a "Nussbaum" meets a great deal more sales resistance than does a "Phillips." I'm guessing that in those same parts of the country, a "Barack" would meet with a great deal more sales resistance than would a "Brad," and I really can't think of any parts of the country where I'd expect the opposite to be true. No matter what they were selling. --Bob

tlynn says:
you could say that about any old geezer with the young chick. Doesn't make the young chick a whore. Makes her a young chick with a lotta loot for putting up with the old geezer, but since she's not out on the pavement lining up the geezers of any age, taking cash for it, she's not a whore. She's a young chick with very bad taste &, uh, a lotta new loot.
I've seriously had this discussion, or part of it, with people who contend that all wives are whores if they ever have sex with their husbands at a time when they really didn't want to. A thorny issue to discuss. We're talking "not really in the mood right now", not rape.
And they say that money works as an aphrodesiac between undesirable men & the women they desire. Never did for me, & I once actually was young enough to count in the target group, but I'm just one voice here.
I think the reason the whatever actually hit the fan here is that the woman really did think she could live her life, post her instagrams with the stars, etc, all of them fully clothed (or as fully clothed as she gets; the stars all were fully clothed in the ones I've seen) & Sterling was treating her like some kind of property, who he could order to do his bidding in every aspect of her life.
So she taped his "rules of the road".
