The Ultimate QoD Challenge -- Week 3, Friday

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Fri Apr 25, 2014 3:56 pm

Bets, bets, bets! Who's got bets?

Bob Juch - 100% of 76 = 76
themanintheseersuckersuit - 100% of 48 = 48
plasticene - 80% of 43 = 34.4
kroxquo - 49% of 34 = 16.66
jarnon - 50% of 30 = 15
smilergrogan - (pi x e)% of 62 = 5.29
franktangredi - 10% of 30 = 3
Bob78164 - 10% of 23 = 2.3
ShamelessWeasel - 0% of 67 = 0
christie1111 - 0% of 2 = 0
MarleysGh0st - 0% of 2 = 0

I haven't used that "e" constant in years. I had to drag out my graphing calculator, circa 1996, to calculate smiler's bet. :D

Luckily for all of you, there is no math in today's question. Just another landmark.

If you wanted to see the world's tallest statue of Jesus Christ, to which country would you need to travel? (Hint: The correct answer is not Oral Roberts University.)

Your answer is due by Monday 4/28 at 4 PM EDT.

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

I always assumed it was Christ the Redeemer in Brazil. Since you're asking, I'm assuming it's wrong but I'm going with t anyway.

I guess this question will just have to be my cross to bear.
If you wanted to see the world's tallest statue of Jesus Christ, to which country would you need to travel? (Hint: The correct answer is not Oral Roberts University.) Everything's bigger in Australia.

There's just no way it can be Brazil, and I can't think of any other really big Jesus statues, so I'll just sit this one out.

If you wanted to see the world's tallest statue of Jesus Christ, to which country would you need to travel?

It's Brazil, right? Christ the Redeemer is the most famous Jesus statue in the world, and it towers above Rio de Janeiro.

Wrong! It only looks taller because it sits atop the 2,300-foot-tall Corcovado. It might be the highest Jesus statue in the world, but I asked for tallest.

Christ the Redeemer is 99 feet tall without its pedestal... but it's not even the tallest Jesus statue in South America, much less the world. Cristo de la Concordia in Cochabamba, Bolivia, was completed in 1994 and is 112.2 feet tall without its pedestal. If you count pedestals and man-made mounds, then the title of "tallest Jesus statue in the world" goes to Christ the King in Swiebodzin, Poland, which was completed in 2010 and officially measures in at 172 feet--far taller than Christ the Redeemer (124 feet).

So I would have accepted either Bolivia or Poland as a winning answer. But Brazil was definitely wrong, as a couple of you suspected. Bob J was the only person to give me a correct answer, so he doubles his entire score for the week. TMITSSS went for the obvious answer and became the first person in this series to lose all of his or her points for the week. But we still have plenty of time and plenty of questions to make up for that loss.

10 out of 11 players finished ahead of zero, so they will each get a bonus 1.1 points.

Week 3 Scores
Bob Juch - 8 + 14 + 14 + 40 + 76 (+ 1.1) = 153.1
ShamelessWeasel - 4 + 9 + 30 + 24 + 0 (+ 1.1) = 68.1
smilergrogan - 6 + 8 + 12 + 36 + 0 (+ 1.1) = 63.1
plasticene - 5 + 6 + 0 + 32 + 0 (+ 1.1) = 44.1
franktangredi - 1 + 5 + 4 + 20 + 0 (+ 1.1) = 31.1
Bob78164 - 0 + 3 + 0 + 20 + 0 (+ 1.1) = 24.1
kroxquo - 2 + 4 + 0 + 28 - 16.66 (+ 1.1) = 18.44
jarnon - 3 + 3 + 0 + 24 - 15 (+ 1.1) = 16.1
christie1111 - 0 + 0 + 2 + 0 + 0 (+ 1.1) = 3.1
MarleysGh0st - 0 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 0 (+ 1.1) = 3.1
themanintheseersuckersuit - 0 + 8 + 0 + 40 - 48 = 0

Total Scores After Week 3
Bob Juch - 289.3
ShamelessWeasel - 196.3
plasticene - 171.8
smilergrogan - 151.59
franktangredi - 107.8

I think the statue of Christ at the highest altitude is Christ the Redeemer of the Andes at 12,572 feet. I've been there.
