The Ultimate QoD Challenge -- Week 2, Thursday

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Thu Apr 17, 2014 4:54 am

"Ten!"

As I promised Frank last week, I would be asking a bunch of music-related questions this week. You've already seen some. Now here come some more in a game called...

"Does Anybody Really Know the Words to These Things?"

Today's round is all about official state songs. Below are the titles of 10** official state songs. For each one, tell me which U.S. state has that as its official state song. 4 points for each correct answer. And don't forget to make your bet percentage on tomorrow's "Fat Chance" question about official songs and anthems.

Answers are due by Friday at 4 PM EDT.

1. "These Green Mountains"
2. "On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away"
3. "Where the Columbines Grow"
4. "You Are My Sunshine"
5. "Carolina"
6. "Rocky Top"
7. "Home on the Range"
8. "Yankee Doodle"
9. "Old Folks at Home"
10.
"Fat Chance" bet: ___%

(** = Actually, 9 songs. #10 is not an oversight. That is intentional, as it represents at least one state that currently has no offical song.)

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Yes, there are easier songs I could have used in this round, such as "My Old Kentucky Home" or "Beautiful Ohio"... but those would have given away too many of my points. :P

1. "These Green Mountains" -- Vermont

It makes sense. It's "The Green Mountain State".

2. "On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away" -- Indiana

The mention of the Wabash River should have narrowed this one down to either Indiana or Illinois. Illinois' state song is the very uninspiringly-titled "Illinois".

3. "Where the Columbines Grow" -- Colorado

The columbine is the state flower, and the namesake for the high school in Littleton.

4. "You Are My Sunshine" -- Louisiana

This was a high-level WWTBAM question many years ago. The former governor, Jimmie Davis, wrote it.

5. "Carolina" -- South Carolina

It was one or the other. North Carolina's official state song is "The Old North State".

6. "Rocky Top" -- Tennessee

This is one of ten official songs in the Volunteer State.

7. "Home on the Range" -- Kansas

Had to be one of the prairie states.

8. "Yankee Doodle" -- Connecticut

Had to be a New England state.

9. "Old Folks at Home" -- Florida

If you knew this song is also known as "Swanee", then you could have narrowed it down to Florida or Georgia, the site of the Suwannee River.

10. (no state song) -- New Jersey or Virginia

Technically, Virginia has no official state song. Its traditional song, "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny", lost its official status in 1997 on the grounds that its lyrics can be viewed as racist. The Virginia government has spent the last 17 years fielding candidates for a new state song. "Shenandoah" could have become the new state song in 2006, but it was rejected by the state House.

It was four days in a row with a perfecto. Bob J posted his second perfect score this week... but will his massive Week 2 score hold up after the "Fat Chance"?

4/14 + 4/15 + 4/16 + 4/17 Scores (12 participants)
Bob Juch - 10 + 15 + 10 + 40 = 75
ShamelessWeasel - 5 + 6 + 30 + 28 = 69
plasticene - 5 + 12 + 10 + 24 = 51
franktangredi - 7 + 13 + 6 + 24 = 50
smilergrogan - 6 + 8 + 10 + 20 = 44
MarleysGh0st - 3 + 6 + 0 + 24 = 33
themanintheseersuckersuit - 5 + 4 + 0 + 24 = 33
Bob78164 - 4 + 8 + 0 + 20 = 32
jarnon - 5 + 12 + 0 + 12 = 29
kroxquo - 4 + 6 + 0 + 16 = 26
Appa23 - 0 + 20 + 0 + 0 = 20
christie1111 - 0 + 10 + 2 + 4 = 16
