Resistance was futile.

#1 Post by MarleysGh0st » Mon Mar 31, 2014 8:15 am

I've been assimilated by Evil Facebook. :|

I've just sent a couple of you a friend request (using my real name), but IIRC, there was some sort of group set up specifically for Bored Buddies? Can someone point me in the right direction?

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Thanks!

Besides joining Facebook, I'm thinking about finally upgrading to a smart phone and as part of that, cancelling my landline and only using the smart phone. It's ridiculous how much of my home phone bill goes to calling plans, taxes, fees and surcharges, and how little is for actual calls. But I seem to have an atavistic fear of getting rid of the landline.

It's a high-tech stress week, here in the Marley household.

Marley's been replaced by a Facebook-pod Marley. There's only a few of us real people left.

You don't have to do anything. The collective will seek you out and assimilate you now that you've joined us.

No offense intended.

I'm starting out slow, seeing how it works, and learning what privacy setting I want. And I'm resisting Facebook's urgings to "Like" a nearly endless offering of friends, music, movies, books, and every other connection of any possible commercial (or NSA) interest.

And it's not like I'm a Luddite; I'm a computer nerd!

But somehow, time has been having an effect on me. I remember when computers were supposed to be computers, that sat on your desktop*, instead of phones. And programs were programs, not apps.

<sigh>

I had computers that sat on my desk but to save your program you had to punch out a paper tape. You loaded the compiler/editor from paper tape too.

I haven't gotten that friend request either. Sigh.

One of the 1st jobs I tried out for as a teen was punching punch cards to be fed into some kind of calculating system. We will not actually demean the term "computer" by calling it that, but I didn't get the job because my 1st stack of punched cards wasn't perfect, i.e. all the little holes on one of them didn't line up.

At one job long ago, I was the person in charge of a computer system, a real computer by then, that had a memory that disappeared if the machine was unplugged. Everybody had their resume on this machine, as the company was going out of business. (This was in line with the future of computers as we now know them; not to actually compute anything, but to store text.) Part of my job was guarding the plug from mishaps.

At another long-term job, the 1st computer system we used, software & hardware was by Digital.

And I am a C programmer. Anybody want a C programmer?

Do I not qualify as a nerd?

Facebook is not only evil but extremely poorly organized, & as you know their privacy settings (a) don't work & (b) mean nothing. I am on it though, for various reasons I shouldn't go into here.

Since you're one of the few who has an interest in appearing on the show I do have a tidbit of unusual information... a friend here in LA was called in last week by a contestant coordinator working for WWTBAM to go in and do a run-through for the show. It was held at the ABC studios. They were paid to play the game (not a whole lot) and were given bonus money if they advanced during gameplay. And due to non-disclosure forms that were signed, I have no idea if it was for tweaking the game or interviewing possible new hosts. Let the speculations begin...
I believe in the usefulness of useless information.
