Maybe he was trying to say "too old." However, (I looked this up) the modern pentathlon has been an Olympic event since 1912. It's modern only in comparison to the ancient pentathlon.

That was how I heard it and understood his reasoning. It was a problem with the interpretation of "modern". It made his considering the decision to go with the choice he was unfamiliar with all the more ironic, since Pershing was born before any of the others.
