DWTS shakeup

#1 Post by jarnon » Fri Feb 07, 2014 11:52 am

Dancing with the Stars has fired music director Harold Wheeler and his entire band, and replaced him with Ray Chew.

Chew has worked on American Idol and is 45 years old. (Wheeler is 70.)

At least they didn't replace the band with recorded music.

Now if they can just replace babbling Brooke and the crazy Italian keep, Len, Carrie Ann and Tom

I have always thought the band and particularly the singers were not very good.

But that way it makes the "dancers" look better. :D

More musical chairs: Rickey Minor's band, on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno for the past two years, is back on American Idol. And Seth Meyers's band leader on Late Night will be his former SNL colleague Fred Armisen.

Brooke will not be back for the next season, which starts March 18 or so. The new format makes her function less useful.

I was unaware of Fred Armisen's musical background until I saw this article a few days ago:

Erin Andrews to Replace Brooke Burke-Charvet.

I'm not sure this is an upgrade.

Fox Sports reporter Erin Andrews, who finished third on Season 10 of Dancing With the Stars, will replace recently ousted Brooke Burke-Charvet next month as co-host of ABC’s ballroom-dancing competition, according to People.com.

This was a bit of a head-scratcher, if only because she's at Fox Sports, one of the more recognizable names involved with the startup FoxSports1 and FoxSports2 cable channels, and frequently a sideline reporter at college and pro games. Not sure what free time that gives her to do DWTS. Her dancing interests aren't in question -- she's studied dancing in younger days, and her sister is a professional dancer.

DWTS doesn't need a new co-host or new band...it needs actual Stars. Not one person will tune in to watch Erin instead of Brooke, or hear the new band. They are nibbling around the edges.

They also need to stop killing the show by overexposure like they did another show we're somewhat familiar with...

I would not call it overexposed. They just went from two shows a week to one, and they run 10 weeks in spring and 10 in fall. Or maybe 12, but it's not too much.

I've only watch two of the 17 seasons, though, so I'm not the expert.
