Icky winter storm coming tomorrow-ugh.

#1 Post by Kazoo65 » Thu Jan 23, 2014 8:35 pm

We're under a winter storm warning for tomorrow through 7am on Saturday. We're due to get several inches of new snow-on top of all the snow we got 2 weeks ago during the polar vortex-and they are talking about near-blizzard conditions. They have already cancelled practically every school in the area for tomorrow.

I bet the groundhog won't want to come out of his burruw on February 2nd. It's too cold. That would be good-we need an early spring.

A work teammate thought this would be a good week to go to his family home in Michigan.

Yes, it's winter. :|

If you want to escape the winter weather, I suggest California, where they have sun and warmth...and drought and wildfires.

It's a little chilly there today: Northern California is in the 40s and southern California is in the 60s. Of course it's 16° here right now.

Now this is strange: I just checked national temperatures and it's in the 30s in North Dakota but in the teens in Oklahoma and north Texas. I guess a warm front is moving south soon.

Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia are in single digits.

It was only 7:30 am in California when you quoted those temperatures. It does get "chilly" at night (a phrase that would make much of the country laugh, at the moment), but today's highs are forecast in the 70s.

I see it's still only 30° there. It's 37° in Bismark, ND.

We've been having snow off and on all day. It's going to be only in the le digits above zero for the next 3 days-the polar vortex, Part 2. The weatherman on TV said we may get a couple more inches of snow tomorrow.

I hope my brother and SIL get back from their honeymoon-they spent the last week in sunny warm Antigua. They will want to go back when they reach Detroit and find out how yucky it is here!

Thanks.

It looks like the weather will cooperate with my planned departure this afternoon. So I should be back in reasonable weather tonight. --Bob

I woke up just in time for this cold blast to come through. It's just dropped 9 degrees in the last 15 minutes.... on our way from 50 to near 0 by morning....

It's 61 degrees and sunny but schools have already canceled for tomorrow and maybe Wednesday.
Two plus inches of snow around here is a big deal. These fronts usually run several hours behind what the weather service predicts, so maybe I can get my important stuff done in the morning and then go home and stay.off.the.roads. No one here knows how to drive in that kind of weather.

You are so right, Marley. We don't have the outerwear, boots, heavy coats or the right tires or equipment to deal with snow. The problem with this front is it could include ice and the predicted low for Wednesday night is 15.

I work in insurance and I sure hope the ice stays away. The pine trees around here snap like crazy and do a lot of damage.
I can't even think about how badly people drive in this kind of weather.

We're supposed to get two inches starting at noon tomorrow. It will also be 22° tomorrow morning with a wind chill of 10° and back to 22° tomorrow evening. Guess who won't be driving to play Team Trivia tomorrow night?

I got a automated phone call at 5:30 AM from my school district letting me know that school was on and that we were following our normal schedule. After I had made the 25 mile drive in to school and was in my office preparing for my 7 AM breakfast "duty", I heard one of the teachers in the hall tell another that the district had now decided that we weren't going to have school today so we could go home. I wish they had figured that out 90 minutes earlier so that I could have jumped back in bed.

Actually, it was probably a good decision to send us home. Although it was sleeting pretty hard on me while I drove in, actual snow did not start until about 8:30. It has been snowing ever since here in central MS and our deck & surrounding yard is completely covered. It is a beautiful sight. Since they are predicting a high of 32 today, I don't expect a lot of this precipitation to have melted when I drive in tomorrow at 6 AM.

Even with all that, I love these rare instances of snow. I actually did my 3 mile walk in the early stages of the snow because it was such a cool unusual experience.

Not much snow but plenty of ice and very cold temperatures. School is cancelled again tomorrow. The snow was not supposed to reach the Birmingham area about 100 miles north of here. They got plenty and now have children and teachers staying at the schools overnight as they have no way to get home. People are stranded on the streets and many shelters have been opened to try and have a warm place and food for these poor people. I have a good friend spending the night at a mall in Birmingham as there was no way she could make it home.

We do tend to overreact here in the south when they say the word snow, but we have a reason. We do not have the resources necessary to handle getting the roads passable not to mention the fact no one here knows how to drive in it. Several fatal car accidents across the state and roads have been closed everywhere.

Tomorrow morning should be interesting, as they are predicting a low of 14 tonight.

It's 18° here right now. We got about 1.5 inches of snow.
