Lyrically Speaking - 1/27/14

#1 Post by Gimme A Squiggly » Mon Jan 27, 2014 7:30 am

Back in the day when I was running Ben Franklin stores, muzak used to be time tested, finely aged and mellow music. But I have my minions fill the CD's I play and replay in my stores with plenty of newer music, just to show how hip this old man can be. Here is a selection of music from those glorious years that begin with a two (No, not the third century, sorry Marley...) that we included on last year's Summer CD. Yeah, sure, go ahead and fling your insults and shake your fists at me... I can't help it you aren't all aren't as down with the sickness as ol' Sammy Dubya. Oh wait, excuse me...

Could we have security please remove the 400 pound twerkers wearing spandex from the clearance aisle, please?

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

1. I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sweep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

2. When children have to play inside so they dont disappear
While private eyes solve marriage lies cuz we dont talk for years
And football teams are kissing queens and losing sight of having dreams
In a world that what we want is only what we want until its ours

3. There ain't no reason you and me should be alone
Tonight, yeah baby
Tonight, yeah baby
I got a reason that you who should take me home tonight

4. When you're on a holiday
You can't find the words to say
All the things that come to you
And I wanna feel it too

5. Head under water
and they tell me to breathe easy for a while
the breathing gets harder,
even i know that

6. So this is where you fell
And I am left to sell
The path to heaven runs through miles of clouded hell
Right to the top
Don't look back
Turning to rags and giving the commodities a rain check

7. Yes, I understand that every life must end, uh-huh
As we sit alone, I know someday we must go, uh-huh
Oh I'm a lucky man, to count on both hands the ones I love
Some folks just have one, yeah, others, they've got none

8. I trade my soul for a wish,
Pennies and dimes for a kiss
I wasn't looking for this,
But now you're in my way

9. So by the light of the moon, she rubs her eyes
Sits down on the bed and starts to cry
And there's something less about her
And I don't know what I'm supposed to do
So I sit down and I cry too
But don't let her see

10. Settle down, it'll all be clear
Don't pay no mind to the demons they fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found
Just know you're not alone

11. I look and stare so deep in your eyes
I touch on you more and more every time
When you leave I'm begging you not to go
Call your name two, three times in a row

12. Like a blue bird with his heart removed, lonely as a train
I've run just as far as I can run
If I never see the good old days shinin' in the sun
I'll be doin' fine and then some

The audio on this video isn't great, but I was at this particular concert, exactly two years ago today, so when the audience joins in at the end, my voice is part of this recording, too. 8)

Little by Little/Oasis -- because it's the only 2000s song I can think of at the moment that I'm sure came out in the 2000s. Most of my knowledge of current popular music comes from watching Cold Case.

I think 9/11/01 was a Tuesday, so 9/11/00 was a Monday, I think 2000 was a leap year (400 year rule), so 31+29+31+30+31+30+31+31+10 = 254 =36 weeks + 2days, so 1/1/2000 was a SATURDAY

Yesterday I happened to see the last 20 minutes or so of the movie End of Days, which takes place just before midnight on the eve of Y2K. At 11:51 pm, Arnold Schwarzenegger and the girl he's trying to save from Satan's clutches enter a church to escape from hordes of pursuing devil-worshipers, and they find a service going on, so he fires his gun into the ceiling and tells everyone to get out. So since everyone's in church, it must be ... hm, dead end.

Okay, this year, 1/1/2014 was Wednesday; 364 (7*52) days before that was also a Wednesday, so 365 days before that, 1/1/2013, was a Tuesday. Applying that logic 14 times would make 1/1/2000 a Wednesday if there were no leap years, but there are four leap days to add, for 2012, 2008, 2004, and 2000 (a leap year despite ending in 00, because it's divisible by 400), so count back four days from Wednesday to get Saturday.

3. There ain't no reason you and me should be alone
Tonight, yeah baby
Tonight, yeah baby
I got a reason that you who should take me home tonight

4. When you're on a holiday
You can't find the words to say
All the things that come to you
And I wanna feel it too

5. Head under water
and they tell me to breathe easy for a while
the breathing gets harder,
even i know that

6. So this is where you fell
And I am left to sell
The path to heaven runs through miles of clouded hell
Right to the top
Don't look back
Turning to rags and giving the commodities a rain check

7. Yes, I understand that every life must end, uh-huh
As we sit alone, I know someday we must go, uh-huh
Oh I'm a lucky man, to count on both hands the ones I love
Some folks just have one, yeah, others, they've got none

8. I trade my soul for a wish,
Pennies and dimes for a kiss
I wasn't looking for this,
But now you're in my way

Call Me Maybe. The only reason I know this is because the veterinarian where MatiasMom works posted a video on their Facebook site playing this song with some of the docs and techs (and critters, sorta) singing along while they held up a card with their number on it. I watched it a couple times but did not notice the artist.

5 Point Bonus: Using only your head (Don't cheat!!!), what day of the week was January 1, 2000?

It was Saturday or Sunday because SteelersFan was able to stay up, and we toasted with champagne at midnight. I'll say Sunday.

Gimme A Squiggly

Love Song - Sara Bareilles (Sara has appeared once on each of the four CD's [all 3 individual songs of which I believe will be in this LSWE... hinthinthint], and has led off the most recent two... with this one being the first song on the current CD, and "Brave" leading off the Fall CD....)

6. So this is where you fell
And I am left to sell
The path to heaven runs through miles of clouded hell
Right to the top
Don't look back
Turning to rags and giving the commodities a rain check
It's Time - Imagine Dragons (I never really cared much for this song, probably because I always conflated it with that piece of sh*t the Lumineers released around the same time... but the Dragons have really won me over with Demons and Radioactive, both of which completely kick ass...)

7. Yes, I understand that every life must end, uh-huh
As we sit alone, I know someday we must go, uh-huh
Oh I'm a lucky man, to count on both hands the ones I love
Some folks just have one, yeah, others, they've got none
Just Breathe - Pearl Jam (Another shocker when I looked this song up... and even more shocking when I heard the Willie Nelson version for the first time on TBone's Boneys collection he sent me. BTW, TBone, I tried to put together an All Boneys edition of Mecca Monday, but since I was limiting myself to only the Summer CD, I came up a few songs short of a full game. I could definitely put together a nice sized game from the collective works, and I'll bet I spot a handful of Mecca songs on your 2013 list when it gets released...)

8. I trade my soul for a wish,
Pennies and dimes for a kiss
I wasn't looking for this,
But now you're in my way
Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen

9. So by the light of the moon, she rubs her eyes
Sits down on the bed and starts to cry
And there's something less about her
And I don't know what I'm supposed to do
So I sit down and I cry too
But don't let her see
Her Diamonds - Rob Thomas (Of the four CD's, none of them had specific times ingrained in my brain with them more than the Summer CD... because I almost always started it up at midnight every night. This was the song that ushered in last break at 5:00...)

10. Settle down, it'll all be clear
Don't pay no mind to the demons they fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found
Just know you're not alone
Home - Phillip Phillips

11. I look and stare so deep in your eyes
I touch on you more and more every time
When you leave I'm begging you not to go
Call your name two, three times in a row
Crazy In Love - Beyonce & Jay Z

12. Like a blue bird with his heart removed, lonely as a train
I've run just as far as I can run
If I never see the good old days shinin' in the sun
I'll be doin' fine and then some
How Long - Eagles (Off of one of their comeback albums... the folks in Bentonville who make these fine CD's seem to have fallen in love with this song. Since first appearing on the Summer CD, it has also made the Fall and current winter CD's...)

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist you would choose to represent the 21st Century on the Mecca CD.

I was liberal with this, as there was at least one song that was a little before the 2000's. Everyone's Krox got credit...

5 Point Bonus: Using only your head (Don't cheat!!!), what day of the week was January 1, 2000? - Saturday (This game was meant to celebrate the 2000's, so none of that when the 21st Century started bullcrap, okie dokey?)
