Checkbook Software Question

#1 Post by Rexer25 » Tue Jan 21, 2014 1:57 pm

We have been using quicken for years now, but the old computer had a hard drive crash. We have a different computer, and a quicken backup, but we don't have $75 right now to pay for the new version of quicken. I downloaded gnucash, but it requires qix files for import, and all I have is the quicken backup. Does anyone have any suggestions for a freeware checkbook program that can import a quicken backup file? Or are we destined to buy the new version of quicken in order to keep track of our account?

TIA

I'm guessing you don't have your original install disk(s)? You paid for a copy so shouldn't feel guilty about borrowing a friend's copy to install.

Please start backing up your files! You can get free online storage from many different companies including Microsoft and Google.

The old computer ran XP. The new computer runs Windows 8. The old version of quicken is not compatible with 8.

Oh, that's different!

What is the file type suffix of your backup file?

Sorry for the delay, I had family things and trivia tonight.

As best as I can tell that's a full image of your primary file. Just rename it to *.QDF and use it.

Now that Bob has weighed in, does anyone else have an answer? Does anyone use free checkbook software?

I use free checkbook registers. I am the only one. They looked at me with a "How quaint" expression when I asked for one the other day.

You and SteelersFan. Our checkbook is always up to the second.

Which probably explains why I write very few checks on the family account . . .

I doubt you will find a program that takes a quicken backup. You should find a friend you trust and have them load the Quicken file in their Quicken, and export the file to qif, then you will be able to use it in GNUCash.

I have tried alternatives to Quicken, but I always go back to Quicken. I see Quicken 2014 Deluxe in Amazon.com for $30...

That's the only solution that I can see. But the backup is a real QDF file; just an image copy. The problem is that QDF files are encrypted and only Quicken can decode them.

I took your advise and ordered quicken 2014. It's not here yet, but any day now...
