Looks like I'm going to Dallas

#1 Post by Bob78164 » Sun Jan 12, 2014 9:56 pm

For the second straight year, my partner and I won the District 23 Finals for North American Open Pairs, Flight B. This gives us the right to play in the event's national finals in Dallas this spring, and a $700.00 stipend from the ACBL. So it looks like I'll be in Texas for the first time since 1996. --Bob

Effective for the 2015 event they've raised the Flight B limit to 2500 master points, so I'll have one or two more shots. But I'm still hoping to improve on last year's fourth-place finish at the Nationals. --Bob

You are over 2k now aren't you so they went on when the event started or do they average the points for the pair? i didn't know they did that when I played in PHX so I said A because my partner had 3300 points but they averaged us in the scoring and we snuck in under 2K with my 660

They don't average, but the critical date is the points that appear in the April Bulletin, which is run on March 6 or thereabouts and essentially picks up points that you won through February. I was well under 2000 then, and in fact my recorded points didn't cross 2000 until the October cycle.

I'll certainly be under 2500 for next year's event (I've just crossed 2200), and I think it's more likely than not that I'll still be below 2500 for the year after that. --Bob

Looks like I'll be arriving the evening of March 26.

Can you recommend a hotel? The tournament is at the Sheraton downtown, but the bridge rooms are already booked. There's a Homewood Suites about half a mile away. Is the walk reasonably safe? I'll be finishing sessions not long before midnight. --Bob

The Hotel Indigo is closer and very nice. I knew other consultants who stayed there when I was working at AAFES.

Congratulations!

And you may not be the only person on the Bored traveling to Dallas this spring. I'm really hoping that the Kentucky Wildcats and/or the Louisville Cardinals make it to the NCAA Final Four this season. If one or both of them do, I'm driving myself and a couple of people down to Dallas to attend the Final Four. Unfortunately, this occurs after your bridge tournament, so our paths will not cross.

This would be my second trip to Texas within 2 years, as I was in Houston for a week in March-April 2012.

I think your expectation of a Final Four for either of those schools is a bit high. I'd love to see it, but I don't foresee it.

I will also be going to Dallas. I will arrive on Friday the 21st and head back home on Friday the 28th. Today I was able to book a room for all 7 nights at the Sheraton.

No partners lined up yet, which is typical for me. My wife Margaret will also be joining me so I may not play my three session a day format as I usually do. I may do some site seeing.

A BB gathering would be splendid, my preference would be that it be at the Sheraton.

Bob, if my regular partner goes, would love to try a KO with you and your partner. But I suspect you may be arriving later in the week--closer to your event. Oh, btw, congrats on the win, impressive.

My present plans are to arrive Wednesday evening, March 26, and depart Monday, March 31. I expect to play the Silidor Open Pairs on Thursday, and (of course) I'm hoping to play that Friday as well. --Bob

Just bumping this up in case anyone is still interested in a BB thingie. I arrive the 21st and leave the 28th. Bob####s arrives the 26th and leaves the 31st. So, it would appear the 26th or 27th is best. If this is happening I suggest something at the Sheraton Sports Lounge between 4-7:30. Usually the afternoon session is over by 4 or 4:30 and the evening session starts at 7:30.

It's still not clear that I'll actually arrive on the 26th. I have my hotel room (a room opened up at the Sheraton) but I haven't yet booked my flight because I have a major brief due on the 28th. I guess I have to decide today. --Bob

Got in too late Friday nite to play. Scrachted in side game yesterday morning and took 3rd in Compact KO Bracket 5. Will try the silver ribbon pairs today. Hey Dallas BB, what up with this cool weather?? Actually had to put on a jacket to walk to dinner last night--very nice Italian place I think on Main St.

Work made it a near thing, but I will be on my scheduled flight today. I'll be staying at the Sheraton for anyone who wants to look me up. I'm booked for North American Pairs Saturday and Sunday, but I have no idea what I'll be doing Thursday and Friday. --Bob
