Lyrically Speaking - 1/7/14

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Tue Jan 07, 2014 7:41 am

It's hard to believe we're already a whole two games into the 2014 LSWE! Where does the time go? Well, here's your first edition of Tuesday Wordplay for this season. You veterans know the drill by now... these songs all have a like word in their titles. The format is very simple... almost as simple as putting your answers all within one spoiler! ahem, Saucy, ahem

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

1. And when I touch you
I feel happy inside
It's such a feelin' that my love
I can't hide
I can't hide
I can't hide

2. Follow me into the desert as thirsty as you are
Crack a smile and cut your mouth and drown in alcohol
Cause down below the truth is lying beneath the riverbed
So quench yourself and drink the water that flows below her head

3. Anybody here see the noise, see the fear and commotion
I think we missed it
Anybody here see the love, see the hate, the emotion

4. When times go bad
When times go rough
Won`t you lay me down in the tall grass
And let me do my stuff

5. Everytime I look into the Holy Book I want to tremble (tremble)
When I read about the part where the Carpenter cleared the temple
(temple)
For the guys in the Bible were no different fellows than what I profess
to be
And it causes me shame to know we're not the people we should be

6. I'm not here for your entertainment
You don't really want to mess with me tonight
Just stop and take a second
I was fine before you walked into my life

7. I'm sad but I'm laughing
I'm brave but I'm chicken shit
I'm sick but I'm pretty, baby

8. Having good luck with your financial situation
Play the ponies, be president of the United Nations
Go to work and be a Hollywood stud
Drive your four wheel drive right into the mud

9. I was the first man to ever
Hold you in a special kind of way
And those unfamiliar feelings
That caused you to tremble
I know you remember today

10. See, I was wasted, and I was wasting time
Till I thought about your problems
I thought about your crimes

11. On shadowed ground, with no one around
And a blanket of stars in our eyes
We are drifting free, like two lost leaves
On the crazy wind of the night

12. Well a Doctor and a Lawyer and an Indian Chief
They're all digging that crazy beat

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that contains the magic word of the day.

Mecca Bonus: One of the songs above has been on the Mecca CD. What song number is it? (1 possible point)

5 Point Bonus: What pitcher compiled a dreadful 2-18 record with an unsightly 7.48 ERA for the California Angels in 1996?

Too recent for Bill Hand, and Jose Deleon was even worse than that I think. I can't remember.

Spoiler
1. I Wanna Hold Your Hand - The Beatles
2. Nope
3. Hand Me Down World -- The Who
4. Second Hand News - Fleetwood Mac
5. Gotta be Put Your Hand in the Hand. Don't remember the artist
6. U + Ur Hand - Pink (Philly squirrel represent!)
7. Weird. I look at the lyrics and and reminded of the Alainis Morrissette song Ironic, where nothing IS ironic. But Ironic is not Hand.

"I'm brave but I'm chicken shit" almost sounds like a Weird Al parody of Ironic.

But, I digress. I got nothin'. And I need more coffee.

8. Hand to Hold On To - John Cougar Mellencamp
9. Nope
10. Hold My Hand - Hootie and the Blowfish
11. Slow Hand - Pointer Sisters
12. Willie and the Hand Jive -- Johnny Otis

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that contains the magic word of the day.

One Hand, One Heart -- West Side Story score.

Mecca Bonus: One of the songs above has been on the Mecca CD. What song number is it? (1 possible point)

Hootie and the Blowfish -- #10.

5 Point Bonus: What pitcher compiled a dreadful 2-18 record with an unsightly 7.48 ERA for the California Angels in 1996?

It can't be Rollie Fingers. Did Jim Abbott (he of one hand) pitch for the 1996 Angels?

I am going with Jim Abbott.

Another day off school, another day I get to play!

I Want to Hold Your Hand -- The Beatles

2. Follow me into the desert as thirsty as you are
Crack a smile and cut your mouth and drown in alcohol
Cause down below the truth is lying beneath the riverbed
So quench yourself and drink the water that flows below her head

Some"Hand" song by some 90s "Alternative" band whose job is to sound as depressed as Kurt Cobain actually was while raking in money for playing power chords really loud and singing angsty lyrics.

3. Anybody here see the noise, see the fear and commotion
I think we missed it
Anybody here see the love, see the hate, the emotion

Hand me Down World -- The Guess Who

4. When times go bad
When times go rough
Won`t you lay me down in the tall grass
And let me do my stuff

Hand me Down World -- Fleetwood Mac (or, as I know it, the "bao-bao-bao" song.)

5. Everytime I look into the Holy Book I want to tremble (tremble)
When I read about the part where the Carpenter cleared the temple
(temple)
For the guys in the Bible were no different fellows than what I profess
to be
And it causes me shame to know we're not the people we should be

Put Your Hand in the Hand -- Ocean (Elvis did a pretty bad IMO version, which is the only one my wife had ever heard. And my sheet music has the third line in this cutting as "For the buyers and the sellers were no different fellows than what I profess to be, so I guess this could be a different version than Ocean's, but if so, I don't know it.)

6. I'm not here for your entertainment
You don't really want to mess with me tonight
Just stop and take a second
I was fine before you walked into my life

One Hand in my Pocket (Remix) -- Rosie Palmer and her five sisters

7. I'm sad but I'm laughing
I'm brave but I'm chicken shit
I'm sick but I'm pretty, baby

Hand in my pocket -- Alanis Morrissette

8. Having good luck with your financial situation
Play the ponies, be president of the United Nations
Go to work and be a Hollywood stud
Drive your four wheel drive right into the mud

Hand to Hold On to -- John Mellencamp

9. I was the first man to ever
Hold you in a special kind of way
And those unfamiliar feelings
That caused you to tremble
I know you remember today

Don't Run Away, Handity -- Larry Craig and the Wide Stances

10. See, I was wasted, and I was wasting time
Till I thought about your problems
I thought about your crimes

Hold my Hand -- Hootie and the Blowfish (I typed it as Hottie and the Blowfish the first time -- I sense a new kind of bonus!)

11. On shadowed ground, with no one around
And a blanket of stars in our eyes
We are drifting free, like two lost leaves
On the crazy wind of the night

Slow Hand -- Pointer Sisters

12. Well a Doctor and a Lawyer and an Indian Chief
They're all digging that crazy beat

Watching the Village People on American Bands-hand -- Dick Clark

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that contains the magic word of the day.

Well, I would say Hands, by Jewel, but I notice every song that I know up there only has the singular, and I know how beastly lb can be about his bonuses, so I'll guess "I Take Your Hand" by Mumford and Sons. Not as sure that that's the correct title, but it's the only one with a singular hand I can come up with right now.

Mecca Bonus: One of the songs above has been on the Mecca CD. What song number is it? (1 possible point)

11 would be my guess. nice and bland and inoffensive-sounding, unlike 3, 4, and 7, even though it's probably the dirtiest song up there.

5 Point Bonus: What pitcher compiled a dreadful 2-18 record with an unsightly 7.48 ERA for the California Angels in 1996?

Aw, man, saw baseball and thought you were going to throw one of my favorite ex-Cubs out there, Billy Hands. 1996, though, means you went a different direction. I think that was the year that one-handed pitcher Jim Abbott was so terrible for them. So that's my guess. Which only confirms my thought about the krox bonus.

And those unfamiliar feelings
That caused you to tremble
I know you remember today
Touch the Hand - Conway Twitty

10. See, I was wasted, and I was wasting time
Till I thought about your problems
I thought about your crimes
Hold My Hand - Hootie & the Blowfish

11. On shadowed ground, with no one around
And a blanket of stars in our eyes
We are drifting free, like two lost leaves
On the crazy wind of the night
Slow Hand - Pointer Sisters

12. Well a Doctor and a Lawyer and an Indian Chief
They're all digging that crazy beat
Willie & the Hand Jive - Johnny Otis Show

Mecca Bonus: One of the songs above has been on the Mecca CD. What song number is it? (1 possible point) - #10 - Hold My Hand (On the current CD as well as the Summer CD that Mecca Mondays are built around)

5 Point Bonus: What pitcher compiled a dreadful 2-18 record with an unsightly 7.48 ERA for the California Angels in 1996? - Jim Abbott (Famous for pitching despite being born without a right hand. I missed his ML batting debut by just one game in 1999...)
