Twitter vs. Facebook?

Need some opinions. I keep getting invitations to join Twitter from a high school classmate. I've been resisting, not because I don't care for the classmate (we're already FB friends), but because I don't see the advantages over Facebook. Who here is on Twitter and can tell me why I should sign up or why not? Is it worth the time? Danke.

I am on Twitter, and I enjoy it. It can be anything you want it to be. You can follow accounts to keep up with news, sports or whatever your interests are. I follow a number of comedy writers and other funny people, and I find something to laugh at every day.

I am on FB but not twitter. Don't see the point of both.

I find the two to be very different, with each one sometimes useful in specific situations. I originally signed up for Twitter to keep closer track of the IBM Watson - Jeopardy matches. I used Twitter a lot when I was trying to be on Million Second Quiz. I'm not sure if it helped me get on, but I know some of the production staff used it and I felt more connected to what was going on. I haven't looked at it much since then. I follow only about 30 people (Ken Jennings' quirky Twitter humor is often amusing or clever or just plain weird). I see regular users who follow several hundreds or thousands of people, and I really don't understand how that is practical, since just following 30 seemed to suck up a lot of my time. And I'm "friends" with hundreds of people on Facebook, but it seems that I probably miss 90% of what people post there, since I mostly glance at whatever appears randomly in my feed from time to time. It seems pretty haphazard, unless you use it mainly to send private messages to specific people.

Does anyone here use Quora? I'm not real sure what it is, but I received a solicitation to join from a BB today. I don't know if it has any real value or if it's just another time suck.

There are many people on Twitter who follow lots of people just to get them to follow back. They will unfollow the ones who don't follow back, and sometimes they unfollow anyway. How do they read the tweets from thousands of people? The answer is they don't read them.

My boss wants me to tweet for working, pushing hard to have both FB and Twitter to up the profile of the library. Personally, I've used Twitter to help for solutions to things and it's worked well. There seems to be more serendipity to Twitter, finding people to follow that you wouldn't find with FB.

I use Facebook for friends ( including FORMER students) and family, Twitter for official school business. That may have to change, now that kids are moving away from Twitter.
