RIP Al Goldstein

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Fri Dec 20, 2013 11:22 am

Somehow, I missed the obituary of one of the most influential media figures of the 20th century.

Goldstein was the founder of Screw Magazine, the self-proclaimed Consumer Reports of the porn industry. The magazine (more accurately a newspaper) regularly included reviews of porn films, strip clubs, "novelty devices," and other establishments in the New York area which apparently are now legal in Canada but not here in the U.S. It also included some rather nonartistic nude photos and ads for a variety of escort services and other sex establishments. For a while, the magazine was extremely profitable and made big headlines when it published nude photos of Jackie Onassis taken with a telephoto lens while she was at the beach. However, a combination of other newspapers eventually carrying the types of ads that provided the income for the magazine and the growing availability of similar information on the Internet did Goldstein in and the company went bankrupt in 2003.

Age 77.
