That was a common substitution in WWI - sauerkraut was called "Liberty cabbage", for instance.

I've got a copy of that board game (assuming it's the same one) and interestingly we bought it after I found out I was going to be on the show so that I could practice. But turning down the lights? They don't do that any more.
