That was the reasoning I used while watching the show at home. 8) An excellent question, IMHO, where nobody* memorizes the exact weight of these coins, but everyone has familiarity with their relative sizes and can figure this out.

I have the penny's mass memorized because I use them in an intro. Chem lab on measurement and density. Pre-1982 pennies (95% copper) have a mass of 3.1 grams, post-1982 (97% zinc) have a mass of 2.5 grams. The students determine the density of each type of penny and then calculate the % Cu and Zn from their data. I also use the newer pennies as handy small known masses for physics lab experiments.

Thanks.

But you couldn't answer the question that way if you hadn't also memorized the mass of the other coins, could you?

Smiler beat me to it, but I also have partial memorization in this area. BitD, a friend had a balance-type scale. He had lost some of the calibrated weights used for balancing against an unknown weight. IIRC, a dollar bill weighed one gram and a nickel weighed 5 grams (at least they were close enough for weighing pot). This alone wouldn't necessarily help on this question, but it's good to know...

I just Googled to verify that it was the nickel that weighed 5 grams and found out some other stuff that would help on similar future questions:
1. One cent weighs 2.500 grams, or half the weight of a nickel.
2. As the question stated, one dime weighs 2.268 grams, which, when multiplied by 2.5, equals the weight of a quarter, or 5.670 grams.
3. A half dollar weighs 11.340 grams, or twice the weight of a quarter.
A child of five would understand this. Send someone to fetch a child of five.

Those pre-1982 pennies being 25% heavier than the new ones really messes up these calculations! :P
