MSQ true coincidence with question 4 as it asked on the opening TV broadcast.
The upside to jumping the highest dollar values is a nearly-free-guess for $100K.
I transcribed a show where they did not bother to show the topic tree at the beginning, but they showed most of it after the first question or two. Now I'm curious when and if they showed Panic's topic tree on TV and will find out when I get to the DVR tomorrow.

I noticed when they flashed to it. I think it was early, either after Q1 or Q2.

But don't call him C'mander. By naval custom, any officer who commands a ship is addressed as "Captain," regardless of actual rank. I learned this by watching Mutiny on the Bounty and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Thanks for the kind words about my appearance. I really appreciate it.

If you will indulge me, I'd just like to say a few short words about my experience and my gameplay. I'll put it in a spoiler so that it doesn't fill up your screen and it will make it easier to move along if you are not interested.
Spoiler
I consider it a miracle that I even was selected for the show. Those who watched can see that I am really not ready for primetime. I have been trying out since the Regis era and have tried via the audition route every year that I was eligible. (Some of you might remember that I was a 1-day champ on Jeopardy! in 2004). I don't know what was different about this audition that finally got me to the video interview stage, but I am really grateful that it happened and still can't believe it.

By the transcript, you can also see that I am not really a trivia player. Most of you could have gotten the calendar question. I could easily do the math, but wasn't confident enough that there weren't any tricks in the calendar that would stick in an extra day to screw up the math. Also, most trivia players or aficianados (sp) know their military ranks better than me and could have gotten the Cap'n Crunch question. I did laugh when I saw the question on MSQ. I was happy to know enough to pass the test and thought that I could get into the second round. Mainly, I was glad that I could take my family to NYC and have them watch me play. By the numbers, the chances of that ever happening are vanishingly small.

I won't re-hash what many others have said about the actual taping, but I will say that I agree with Frank's comment in one of the MSQ threads: "they treat the contestants like gold." My episode was the last one of the day. It was a bit difficult having to be there at 7 am and waiting until 4 pm to tape. The staff at the show kept sending in different people to talk to those of us in the "green room". They did a great job relaxing us and keeping the nerves away.

When I saw the transcripts posted, I think that there was some major editing done. Was there only one person before me on that episode?

Just a few things about my actual questions...

As I mentioned before, I could do the math on the calendar question. My gut said not to answer because I couldn't convince myself that it was only a math question. It was a blow to learn that $25000 was off the table. On the Cap'n Crunch question, I knew it wasn't seaman or admiral; but I didn't want to guess wrong. Ouch! Now the $15000 is gone.On the hypocrite question, I thought that doctor might come up because of the similarity in sound to Hippocrates. Is "a flock of seagulls" really a haircut? I was baffled by this question because I personally dont feel that the shag is a great haircut. When I saw mohawk and mullet as choices, I wasn't sure how to answer because I was thinking that there might be a trick there. I'm glad that the audience came through for me on that one. The Snoop Lion question was a gift for me. I am curious how that was shown on the air because Cedric really flubbed the question at least 3 times before he got through it and they didn't re-tape his reading on tape day.

So now, I am in round 2 and I am so grateful!!!

I know that the calendar repeats every 28 years, so 2040 looks like a good possibility. It's not going to be 2016, and since the other dates are after 2040, I'll make that my final answer.

I wouldn't say that "most" could have answered the calendar question. As for the Cap'n Crunch questiion, I happened to hear it on an NPR radio program a few weeks back (and it may have been mentioned here on the Bored as well).

Yes, there was only one person shown - did others tape before you also?

On the broadcast version Cedric had a hard time getting through the question - he kept cracking up with laughter.

Congratulations! You may have used up your lifelines and lost out on some money, but you made it to Round 2 and if you get the next question right, you'll have $100K, which makes up for the questions you jumped.

On tape day, there was another contestant who played after Maria and before I got my turn to play. Maybe her appearance will show up in a different episode.

The Cap'n Crunch question on MSQ had me thinking back to Star Trek:TNG
and that Commander Riker had 3 "pips"on his collar while the lower ranks usually had one or two (think Lt. Commander was three with the third being a different color)

Those who get to Round 2 after having jumped over the $15K and $25K questions would have $28,600 in the bank, and are only risking $3600 on a guess at the $100K question. IIRC all players in this format have taken a guess when their total was the smallest possible going into round 2.

First of all, congratulations on finally making it!

Second of all, don't beat yourself up too much on the calendar question. That particular question is calendar nerd territory. As Sprots said when she asked me in chat the other night, I spit out the answer right away before she could even ask if I wanted the choices or not, but I've been fascinated with the cycles and inner working of our calendar for a long time, so it became a simple math problem for me of adding 28 to 2012. For most, like you, there's a lot of unknown involved that makes it seem tricky. I don't think most people here would have gotten that one right, or like you, probably would have played it safe and passed on it...
