Boz Scaggs: The Revelation

#1 Post by Ritterskoop » Wed Jul 17, 2013 9:28 pm

I saw Boz Scaggs tonight in Charlotte, on his tour to promote his new album Memphis. We knew he was a great pop hitmaker in the 70s with "Lido Shuffle" and "Breakdown" etc., but not all of us knew he was a legitimate, outstanding, rip your heart out bluesman.

Well, we know now.

He did five or six songs from his new album, which kicked ass. But he is not stupid, and knew to head toward older material soon enough (the $50-120-a-ticket crowd was every single one of them older than me (46), and relentlessly Caucasian). His backup singer was behaving herself until they got to "Miss Sun," during which she completely took over and slayed it. Her name is Miss Monet and I predict big things for her.

They finished the set with "Lido Shuffle," then came back for a two-song encore with "Breakdown". They left again but came back for a ten-minute, honest-to-goodness it could have been Duane Allman playing like he did in 1968 on "Loan Me a Dime".

I'm a fan and a convert. Will be buying up some old and new Boz soon. And Miss Monet.

Too bad I hadn't heard. That would have been worth a two and a half hour round trip.

This review matches the experience we had a few weeks later:

I love the lead:

Boz Scaggs' show Sunday at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts featured a riveting performance by a singer who galvanized the room, brought the audience to its feet and turned one of Orange County's stateliest venues into something close to a mosh pit.

For that matter, Scaggs was pretty remarkable, too.

Boz Scaggs was a early member of the Steve Miller Band before he released his first solo album in 1969.

I have in my possession an honest to goodness LP or two purchased in the '70's of his. I love him. That concert sounds marvelous.
Well, then

All of my albums were destroyed in a flood 30 years ago but I still have one 8-track left. :)

Wikipedia says his first solo album was released in 1965.

After singing in bands such as the Wigs and Mother Earth, he traveled to Sweden as a solo performer, and in 1965 recorded his solo debut album, Boz, which was not a commercial success.

He is back on tour and just as awesome, and Miss Monet is still singing with him.

They didn't do "Miss Sun," but they did that magnificent "Somebody Loan Me a Dime" again and it was just mind-blowing.

I taught myself how to play the opening organ solo perfectly.
