In the good ol' days before WWOQs became common, this might be a reasonable low-to-mid level question, assuming a trip down the coast. But considering that nobody should really be expected to know exactly where the famous cities of Blue Ball (population 1,031) and Climax (population 297) are within their respective states and considering that the question doesn't specify a particular route, I thought there could easily be one that passed through Tennessee instead of South Carolina.

In fact, Google Maps says that taking I-81 into Tennessee results in a route of 1,043 miles, not that much different than the 959 miles taking I-95.

I suppose...if that's the only place one could have learned this.

I though it was slightly more common knowledge that sand can be melted down to form glass, while wood...burns.

It only takes 1009 miles, if you go to Bristol, Tennessee and then head south through Johnson City.

EDIT: I got the distance through Tennessee down to 965 miles by taking more direct routes through PA and GA. With a little more planning, you could probably find a route that is 959 miles.

There was quite a bit of tittering in the audience when this question was read.

Yeah, but none if those back road routes could be called the "Fastest Route."

You're exactly right, Marley, but I'm putting this one down to hotseatitis. If she'd seen the movie, she could have called it before the answer came up.
