Real wedding news today, so an earlier than normal posting. We have a theme. BD went to school in Newport, Rhode Island, along with several of her bridesmaids. Our original intent was to use the administration building, a former mansion itself, as the wedding site. The school offers it for a very low cost to alumni. The rest of the wedding would not have been at a very low cost, though. Newport in the heart of tourist season literally doubles prices for hotels and such. That put the kibosh on that idea. The actual venue isn't all that far from Newport and will be in the heart of its own tourist season, but was much less expensive.
The theme? Newport mansions. Each table will be one of the mansions, with photos and other such stuff on it for identification. The details aren't worked out yet, but the idea is definitely a go. BD's table will be The Breakers, the Vanderbilt's mansion next door to the school. School friends, or perhaps the bridesmaids' table, will be Ochre Court (the school admin building). The black sheep of each family will be seated at Carey Mansion, now a school dorm but purportedly haunted and used as Collinwood for "Dark Shadows" and blown up in Schwarzenegger's "True Lies". Okay, that last part about the black sheep might not happen, but we came up with it last night while brainstorming the details.
The winery we frequent down there is having one of their wine debuts in a few weeks. BD will come with us, and after we do our tasting and buy our case or two, we'll hit the Historical Society's gift shops for the theme-related materials. Then the day after that is when we see the venue PTB to set out the meal and decoration details. Little by little, it's starting to come together.

I'm so naive. I thought the theme was "A Wedding".gsabc wrote:Real wedding news today, so an earlier than normal posting. We have a theme.

Did she go to Salve?
I lived in Newport before moving to Hawaii. I know, a rough life!
That mansion from Dark Shadows was sooooo creeepy. Okay, we were kids and knew it was from Dark Shadows so it took on a life of it's own.
Are you going to have the Tea House on the table? That restoration was spearheaded by the woman my grandmother worked for. A decendant of the Vanderbilt's, naturally. The summer of the last US Cup Race was spent in Newport living in a house overlooking the entrance to the harbor (next to the Auchincloss estate). It was great fun pulling into the driveway, even if the people behind me didn't know I was going to the servant's quarters.
My grandmother told stories of little 'John John' getting in trouble at the summer beach club she worked at because the kids would ride the automatic door as it opened and closed. Bailey's Beach was the club.
Fun memories!
Thanks gsabc!

Maybe we had a theme, and I did not realize it.
I am thinking that it was "I guess he'll due. Certainly he can not be that obnoxious for the next 60 years."
