I knew the answer, more I think from old stories of horseback riding than from motorcycles.
The audience contestants (like all the other contestants) are chosen at TPTB's discretion. If you're in the audience and you want a chance, you'd better see to it that the warm-up comedian interacts with you! Elliot and his friends were sitting right there in the front row for the three episodes I saw tape on October 17, and they had a lot of interaction with the comedian.
