ANSWERS/POINTS LS THEME THURSDAY March 13
Looks like I just couldn't stand leaving out my beloved Bonus Instrumental, as today's bonus is the theme and the matching and the Super Bonus is one of those give me the work and the composer type things. PS to mini: it won't be Herb Alpert anymore.

I fear rivers overflowing
I hear the voice of rage and ruin
3. No one's picking up the phone
Guess it's clear he's gone
And this little masochist
Is lifting up her dress
4. A goddess on a mountain top
Burning like a silver flame
The summit of beauty and love
5. When you walk into the room
You pull me close and we start to move
And we're spinning with the stars above
And you lift me up in a wave of love
6. Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
7. Please send a little girl for me to thrill
A girl who wants my kisses and my arms
A girl with all the charms of you
8. Tell me did you fall for a shooting star
One without a permanent scar
And did you miss me while you were
Looking at yourself out there
9. Telegraph cables, how they sing down the highway
As they travel each bend in the road
And when people meet, in this romantic setting
They're so hypnotized by the lovely
10. You've turned my world into a dark and lonely place
Like a planet lost in space, my light is fadin'
I'd cross the universe to be right where you are
But I'm right in your backyard
Theme: Five points for the theme and five for pairing them up.
Super Bonus: This composer’s main claim to fame, he came to detest this suite, which fits into today’s theme. He conceived the idea from a book by Alan Leo called The Art of Synthesis, cribbing the chapter layout and, in some cases, the exact chapter titles for his work. It is a glorious piece of work, although I must admit that I was introduced to it by King Crimson rather than any classical type study.
Bonus Bonus: There are seven parts to this piece, what’s missing and why?

Well, I have Earth, Venus, Moon, and Jupiter. A general version of the theme is probably the solar system, but it's probably more than that depending on what the matches actually are or if I could figure out what any of the other ones are. I have a vague recollection of this game (I used a variation of this theme in the October '02 LS), so I must've at least taken a look at it while waiting for the fun to begin on that fateful day....

Sounds like The Planets - Holst
Bonus Bonus: There are seven parts to this piece, what’s missing and why?
Pluto was missing from the list, because it had not been discovered at the time and not yet subsequently demoted from its rank as a full planet.
Of course, Earth is also missing from the list. And that had been discovered for a while.

Well, I thought I had the theme - songs used in movies - based on the first two. But after answering the others, the theme is actually songs with heavenly bodies in their names (or something like that). Pairing them off we get #1 and #5, #2 and #9, #4 and #7. As for the other four, let's just take a WAG and pair #3 and #8 and #6 and #10.

Because Pluto hadn't been discovered yet, and Earth isn't visible in the night sky like the others are.

Theme: Five points for the theme and five for pairing them up.
Theme is planets or celestial bodies. I'll pair up the Venuses in #4 & #7, then WAG 1 & 5, 2 & 8, 3 & 9, 6 & 10

Holst (?), The Planets
Bonus Bonus: There are seven parts to this piece, what’s missing and why? Plutos hadn't been discovered (or discredited) yet and maybe Neptune either?

Looks like you're going for the whole planetary/heavenly bodies thing. I'm going to go with "Nothing Ever Happens on Mars" by Dr. Alan Pearl for the "Nope" answers above (although I'd probably recognize that, so it can't be right). On second thought, make my blanket WAG "Blue Moon" by the Marcels.
Matches:
1-5 (Earth)
2-9 (Wagging for Moon)
3-8 (Jupiter, another WAG)
4-7 (Venus)
6-10 (Mars, my third WAG)

Holst's "The Planets"
Bonus Bonus: There are seven parts to this piece, what’s missing and why?
Earth is missing because it's not a heavenly body, maybe...and Pluto is missing because "The Planets" was written before 1930, and Holst either died before then or never got around to revising it before he died.

Talent is from Mars, I'm From Planet Shitty - Billy Joel
Theme: Five points for the theme and five for pairing them up.
Bodies in the solar system
Venus: 4 & 8
Earth: 1 & 5
Moon: 2 & 9
Mars: 6 & 10
Something Else - I'm guessing The Sun: 3 & 7
Super Bonus: This composer’s main claim to fame, he came to detest this suite, which fits into today’s theme. Gustav Holst. The Sun isn't part of "The Planets" so my "something else" guess above is probably wrong, but then again I don't think the Moon is either.
Bonus Bonus: There are seven parts to this piece, what’s missing and why?
There's 2 planets missing. I don't know when Holst lived. I figure Pluto is missing because it hadn't been discovered yet. I'm figuring also Earth or Neptune are also missing, Earth because it's not a planet in the sky, it's a planet right here, or Neptune because maybe he wrote it before it was discovered. The only piece I have ANY familiarity with is Mars, and that's wacky enough that I'll guess it's early 20th Century, which means Neptune had already been discovered, so probably Earth is missing. So Earth and Pluto. Except Pluto's not a planet anymore, is it? So Earth and Pluto when you wrote this, just Earth now.
My darling dear
Love you all the time
I'm just a fool, a fool in love with you
Earth Angel - The Penguins
2. I hear hurricanes a blowing
I know the end is coming soon
I fear rivers overflowing
I hear the voice of rage and ruin
Bad Moon Rising - CCR
3. No one's picking up the phone
Guess it's clear he's gone
And this little masochist
Is lifting up her dress
The Sun Shines on Her Butt - Ween
4. A goddess on a mountain top
Burning like a silver flame
The summit of beauty and love
Venus - Shocking Blue / Bananarama
5. When you walk into the room
You pull me close and we start to move
And we're spinning with the stars above
And you lift me up in a wave of love
Heaven is a Place on Earth - Belinda Carlisle
6. Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Life on Mars - David Bowie
7. Please send a little girl for me to thrill
A girl who wants my kisses and my arms
A girl with all the charms of you
Staring at the Sun - The Cure (WAG)
8. Tell me did you fall for a shooting star
One without a permanent scar
And did you miss me while you were
Looking at yourself out there
Subway to Venus - Red Hot Chili Peppers (WAG)
9. Telegraph cables, how they sing down the highway
As they travel each bend in the road
And when people meet, in this romantic setting
They're so hypnotized by the lovely
Moonlight in Vermont - Frank Sinatra. I still remember the Happy Days episode where Howard is trying to get some pianist to play that song, but he keeps "accidentally" playing other songs about the moon all night.
10. You've turned my world into a dark and lonely place
Like a planet lost in space, my light is fadin'
I'd cross the universe to be right where you are
But I'm right in your backyard
Talent is from Mars, I'm From Planet Shitty - Billy Joel
Theme: Five points for the theme and five for pairing them up.
Bodies in the solar system
Venus: 4 & 8
Earth: 1 & 5
Moon: 2 & 9
Mars: 6 & 10
Something Else - I'm guessing The Sun: 3 & 7
Super Bonus: This composer’s main claim to fame, he came to detest this suite, which fits into today’s theme. He conceived the idea from a book by Alan Leo called The Art of Synthesis, cribbing the chapter layout and, in some cases, the exact chapter titles for his work. It is a glorious piece of work, although I must admit that I was introduced to it by King Crimson rather than any classical type study.
Gustav Holst. The Sun isn't part of "The Planets" so my "something else" guess above is probably wrong, but then again I don't think the Moon is either.
Bonus Bonus: There are seven parts to this piece, what’s missing and why?

2. Bad Moon Rising/Creedence Clearwater Revival
7. Venus/Bobby Vee
Theme appears to be heavenly bodies; not the Spitzerian kind, the ones in the actual heavens. Actually, the housemate who thinks they're a comedian says "she didn't look like 4 figures; more like 2 figures". I didn't ask how housemate should know an actual price on that kind of stuff.
Bonus Bonus: work is "the 7 Planets" by Holst?
Super Bonus: Holst didn't write about any planets not yet discovered in his time, so Pluto &, uh, Uranus are missing?

I know that Holst left out Earth. I don't know why, I guess he just forgot. Or Leo forgot. Or dint want to. For the other omission, I'll guess Pluto hadn't been discovered yet.

THERE WAS NO EARTH PART, I RECKON BECAUSE HOLST FIGURED HE JUST WANTED TO INCLUDE THE OTHER KNOWN PLANETS. THERE ALSO WAS NO PLUTO PART, BECAUSE IT HADN'T YET BEEN DISCOVERED.

I know this is kind of obscure so wasn't surprised that it was a stumper but, as I recall, I had a hard time finding another Mars song and I really wanted to use Life on Mars because I like it so much. I'm not sure why I didn't think of Nothing Ever Happens on Mars (maybe at the time I wrote this I hadn't seen Waiting for Guffman yet), but Caro gets 2 bonus points for mentioning a very reasonable alternative that should have occurred to me this time at least, especially since I was watching a Parker Posey movie on the gay channel when I was looking over this week's games.

I'm scoring the theme points a little differently this year, which probably accounted for ghost's and some of tbone's increase, but lb must have eschewed the bonuses back then as well, as he hits the mark exactly.
