I thought it'd be interesting to see what some people's favorite quotes are. Mine right now is this:

Having just recently attended a dinner celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, the quote from Helen Keller on the program was:

"I do not simply want to spend my life, I wish to invest it".

Advice we could all follow.

I have 2:

1) It's amazing what one can accomplish when one doesn't know what one can't do.

2) The final test of a leader is that he leaves behind him in other men the conviction and the will to carry on; the genius of a good leader is to leave behind him a situation which common sense, without the grace of genius, can deal with successfully.

Those words describe how I'd LIKE to live my life, but sometimes I choose the easier, more traveled path. But when I have time to contemplate the journey, I'd like to think I usually choose differently at least on occasion.

In terms of both inspiring and non-inspiring variety:

(1) Be nice to those you meet on the way up, you'll see them again coming down.

I will call this perhaps a quote of the day, as I was reminded of it when I heard of the sudden disgrace of Governor Spitzer. It seems he never thought of following this adage, and few tears accompany his departure.

I had thought this was a folk or anonymous quote, but it is due to a man whose name I did not know, Wilson Mizner, who did follow it, through a series of careers from con man, gambler, Broadway playwright to Hollywood restaurateur.

(2) The subject who is truly loyal to the Chief Magistrate will neither advise nor submit to arbitrary measures - Junius

More than a little obscure in content, but it's from the masthead of "The Globe and Mail", and beats a lot of other journalistic mottoes, especially the one about "All the News".

(3) . My, my, hey, hey. Rock and roll is here to stay .

Certainly it's funny, but is there a source reference for this? I only ask because Spitzer was 18 years old in 1977 and not likely to have his quotations recorded for posterity at that time.

My only nitpick with this article is that this quote was likely chosen for his entry by the editors of the high school yearbook and not by himself.

Yes!! How Firm a Foundation is a great hymn. I will have the tune running through my head for the rest of the day. I don't mind. I think the tune is what makes this hymn great.
