American Pickers

Meredith comes out and says that today is a special edition of Millionaire. The first two contestants spend their time scouring the country for hidden treasure. From the History Channel show "American Pickers", the pickers themselves - Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz. Mike comes out alone and Meredith asks where Frank is. "The dumpster outside was full," he says, and he's a true picker at heart. He thought he had more time before coming on the show. Mike yells for Frank and he comes onto the set with something wrapped in a blanket. Frank says that he was on the back lot and found some Millionaire props. He removes the blanket; underneath is a Hot Seat. Meredith says that was retired a few years ago. Frank says once it's in the dumpster it's free. Meredith says if it's the one she's thinking about then it's the one on which a female contestant "took a tinkle" on it because she got so excited. "It looks all right," Frank says. Meredith asks if that reduces the price; Mike says, "That's called 'patina'". Meredith says that Mike and Frank are a combination of Indiana Jones and Sanford and Son. Mike says they hit the backroads and search barns, sheds and other places.. Mike and Frank are playing for America's Vet Dogs, a charity that trains dogs for disabled veterans. Mike had a grandfather who was a disabled veteran. Meredith says that no matter what happens, the charity will get $10,000.

The banter between Mike and Frank as they discussed this question was funny (the transcript only captured a fraction of the total dialogue).

As Meredith read the question my mind turned to Eleanor Roosevelt, but that wasn't one of the choices. I would have used a JTQ here because I couldn't decide between Jackie Kennedy and Mother Teresa (neither of which was the right answer, as it turned out).

There was a local contest like this about a million years ago which ended badly -- it made Page One because a fistfight broke out between the second-place competitor and the contest manager. Mr. SecondPlace tried to deny that his hand had slipped off the truck when he nodded off. When the manager insisted that the contest was over, Mr. SecondPlace took a swing at him and unfortunately connected, and the manager, not groggy from lack of sleep, swung back. Contest over.

We were told this story when I was in the greenroom, although they made it sound like it was more than a "tinkle" - there was a puddle on the chair and floor.

Whatever the details of that accident, the Hot Seat was killed off before they moved the set out of 30 W. 67th St. Either Mike and Frank were lying about finding it in the dumpster or TPTB conveniently placed it there for them.

I'm betting it's the latter.
