Trivia that marks the POD for some alternate history stories, like Harry Turtledove's Great War/American Empire/Settling Accounts series. Although the question didn't mention it, that "critical point" was Lee's first invasion of the north. Intercepting the plans allowed McClellan to stop Lee at the battle of Antietam.

When we took our last cruise one of the stops was Ecuador and we were told all about the dropping of the sucre. We didn't see any "Sackies", however?
