1. The movie wasn’t so hot
It didn’t have much of a plot
We fell asleep
Our goose is cooked
Our reputation is shot

Wake up little Susie, Everly Brothers

4. With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now entertain us

Smells like teen spirit, Nirvana

5. Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow, Judy Garland

7. Tell me no secrets tell me some lies
Give me no reasons give me alibis
Tell me you love me
And don't let me cry
Say anything but don't say good bye

Don't it make my brown eyes blue, Crystal Gayle

Both C&W RadioDude and Adult Contemporary RadioDude still play this. :)

8. Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about?

Shaft, Quincy Jones

Bonus Instrumental: This massive work, completed in 1909, is widely considered among pianists to be the most difficult piece to play ever written. It certainly got the best of one pianist, whose life story was made into a movie that I consider to be the best ever to show just how much one can love the piano. Apparently the critics agreed, it was nominated for Best Picture (but lost to one of those crappy, boring epic things) and won a Best Actor Oscar for the portrayal of pianist David Helfgott. The composer (who also fits into today’s theme) left Russia shortly after the October Revolution and had, among pianists, the largest hand span ever recorded (Van Cliburn comes close).

Gotta be Rachmaninoff, but I know I don't get points for composer only.

Bonus Bonus: Hard as it might be to imagine, there is a theme running through today’s selections. There are two hints in the Bonus Instrumental section.

Super Bonus: Why did I do this theme today rather than just save it for a Theme Thursday? (Note the original posting date of August 13, 2002.)

Somebody musta died or borned on that date.

1. The movie wasn’t so hot
It didn’t have much of a plot
We fell asleep
Our goose is cooked
Our reputation is shot

WAKE UP LITTLE SUSIE - THE EVERLY BROTHERS

2. As they pulled you out of the oxygen tent
You asked for the latest party
With your silicone hump and your ten inch stump
Dressed like a priest you was
Tod Browning's freak you was

DIAMOND DOGS - DAVID BOWIE

Who else could name check Tod Browning and actually pull it off?

3. Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of death’s construction

WAR PIGS - BLACK SABBATH

4. With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now entertain us

SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT - NIRVANA

5. Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me

SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW - JUDY GARLAND

6. A broom is drearily sweeping
Up the broken pieces of yesterday’s life
Somewhere a queen is weeping
Somewhere a king has no wife

THE WIND CRIES MARY - JIMI HENDRIX

7. Tell me no secrets tell me some lies
Give me no reasons give me alibis
Tell me you love me
And don't let me cry
Say anything but don't say good bye

DON'T IT MAKE MY BROWN EYES BLUE - CRYSTAL GAYLE

I laughed and laughed when I saw that I had used this. And I'm appalled that lb didn't get it!

8. Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about?

THEME FROM "SHAFT" - ISAAC HAYES

9. I'm like a strange cat running in the heat of the night
I've got a fire in my eyes, got a date with delight
Some kinda moanin' in the heart of the storm
I'm gonna love you so hard, you'll want your loving done

TALL COOL ONE - ROBERT PLANT

10. But I've got to think twice
Before I give my heart away
And I know all the games you play
Because I play them too

FAITH - GEORGE MICHAEL

PIANO CONCERTO #3 - SERGEI V. RACHMANINOV

A lot of people were confused about the artist, which, in most cases of classical pieces (like Moonlight Sonata a couple days ago) would be the composer. Although it might have been a bit lost since I went on and on and on in the question that I didn't actually mention Rachmaninov in it.

Bonus Bonus: Hard as it might be to imagine, there is a theme running through today’s selections. There are two hints in the Bonus Instrumental section.

And YAY! to Caro for being the only one to get it today! They are all (or have at least one member in the band who is) left handed! In the case of the Everlys, both of them are. I don't think Ozzy is lefthanded, but Tony Iommi is. I think that I chose four guitarists who actually played left handed (Bowie, Iommi, Cobain and Hendrix, not sure about the Everlys) thinking that the mental picture might create a spark.

The hints in the Bonus Instrumental was that Rachmaninov was left handed and I also gave the tidbit about his hands, again thinking that might make a connnection.

Super Bonus: Why did I do this theme today rather than just save it for a Theme Thursday? (Note the original posting date of August 13, 2002.)

August 13th is International Left Handed Day. This might have been easier if it were actually on August 13, as someone might have seen a blurb in the paper or the on the internet earlier that day.

I also bought my first (and only) new car on August 13, 1988. Before you think I'm going all lb on you, I remember it because I was leaving the lot when Instant Karma came on the radio. I decided that the combo of that and it being Lefthanded Day meant I should buy it.
