The 2012 ES Avatar Countdown!

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Sun Dec 09, 2012 9:09 am

Woohoo!!! Yes, you know you're thrilled to see it's finally countdown time..... hey, wait a minute! Didn't the promo guy tell us the countdown was going to start 12/12/12? Is this some kind of cheat to beat the Mayan Apocalypse or something?

No, it's just a three day head start to showcase the 15 honorable mentions that just missed cracking the Top 20! So you can see what was just barely not good enough to make it onto the big stage....

But first, a few words on what goes into the selection process for this countdown. I figured I'd just be lazy and copy off of what I wrote last year....

The criteria:

QUALITY: Does the avatar actually look visually appealing?

INSPIRATION: Was the inspiration particularly timely or clever? Was it introduced to the Bored in a notable or interesting way?

REACTION: Did the avatar receive any BB commentary other than a token Found It? (Note, while an important part of the ranking process, it is just a part.... this isn't an all-request list)

DIVERSITY: Is there a similar themed avatar that is better? As intriguing as Snaxx's list was, a countdown of all Sprots/ES avatars would be boring and anti-climactic. This countdown reflects as much of the spectrum of where my inspiration took me this past year as I could possibly work in.

ARTIST'S OPINION: Finally, what are my thoughts on the avatar? I am my own best and worst critic, and my own feelings about these avatars held a lot of sway on what made the cut and where it was ranked.

OK, there! Now, enough of the blabbing and let's get on with the show!!! As usual, I numbered the 15 honorables one, two or three going in chronological order to decide which group they would be showcased in. Today you get to see Group 1, tomorrow Group 2, and Tuesday Group 3.... duh, right? Once we get into the official countdown on Wednesday, I will use that day's honored avatar as my own so it can get one last moment in the spotlight....

Here are the first five honorable mentions <drum roll>..............

"Crowboarding"

Debuted: 1/19/12

Image

This was uly's birthday avatar, which was inspired by a viral video he posted of a crow "snowboarding" on a roof in Russia. This was the first appearance of uly's character where I changed his colors to differentiate him from the male version of MBRS. The look of uly's carefree character gliding down the rooftop while Fanny berates him from the window is a winner in this avatar, and the poor roadkill crow who had his party crashed is a nice touch as well...

"I Dream Of Evil"

Debuted: 4/2/12

Image

The Bored may be dying, but we can still round up an oddball now or then who just asks to be smacked around, and such a poster was tower55 this past Spring. He knew how to ask questions, but didn't know how to accept any answers other than his own for them... and this beautiful avatar was an offshoot of his thread on sensory perception in dreams. The look on the sleeping Sprots' face is perfect, though it makes one think she's having a nightmare.....

"Angry Birds"

Debuted: 7/1/12

Image

This frightening avatar of ES about to be pecked to death by a flock of pissed off birds whose feeder he is raiding was inspired by a combination of Beebs giving a review of the classic Hitchcock film "The Birds" on the Bored after watching it one night, and my having just read the book "Nuts on Squirrels" about the roles of squirrels in birds in their backyard wildlife habitat. You can just tell that this scene isn't going to turn out good....

"The Best Part Of Waking Up"

Debuted: 8/22/12

Image

This avatar is nothing short of classic ES. Here we have a simple drawing of Evil Squirrel doing something mischievous, with appropriate sly look and silly grin on his face. Somehow, this avatar of ES "spiking" the coffee pot evolved from Fanny educating us about the word "prolixity".

"I'm Buster Possum, And I Approve This Avatar"

Debuted: 10/12/12

Image

With BobJuch scrambling to dredge up any undesirable person he could find who had anything positive to say about Mitt Romney, I wanted to make sure it was on record who Skanki Skankova endorsed.... her possum pal Buster. Buster's presidential look is only marred by that bright red dot on his hat emanating from the direction of the grassy knoll....

I hadn't scrolled up far enough in the other thread before so I didn't see the comments on your current avatar.

Throwaway? THROWAWAY???? THROWAWAY?!?!?!?!?

Now it's going to be #1 on my yearly avatar countdown, just on principle!

Oops, uh...spoiler alert!
It's the Final Countdown.....

Usual reactions:

Sprots: It will/will not win!

Random Vague People (who shall remain nameless): What in the name of Sam Hill is that?....

Since Sprots gave her silent stamp of approval to the first batch of honorables, I'm sure she will enjoy today's batch as well!

"Loving Her Was Queasier"

Debuted: 2/8/12

Image

When the subject of the avatar countdown came up at Gridiron earlier this year thanks to the calendars Kiki made everyone with last year's Top 12, I mentioned that this was my current favorite for 2012. As usual, that was the kiss of death, and in the end it rates just an honorable. The only opportunity DK saw in Mr. Opportunity's LS game she got a zero on was the opportunity to get a new avatar, that of a skunk. She walked right into this avatar, featuring her "favorite" Bored skunkette. The expressions and body language on this one are second to none, and it's even neater given both characters are negative images of each other with regards to their color schemes. What's black, white, and red all over? Now you know the answer...

"Buzzing the Tower"

Debuted: 4/10/12

Image

For the second straight day we get an honorable mention inspired by the same drive-by poster! Tower55's inability to ask a question and accept an answer he wasn't looking for were beginning to wear on the nerves of the population, so I showed a graphic example of what he was like by having ES being bombarded with pesky gnats, and getting sprayed in the face my a concerned MBRS. This is one of those avatars that made it this far almost based solely on MBRS alone... much like how she elevated "Ballhawks" and "The End Is Near" in my mind....

"Bolivia Welcomes You"

Debuted: 7/8/12

Image

Hermillion's church outing to Bolivia inspired this avatar of her looking on while ES and MBRS seemed unable to adapt to their new environs. It was totally unintentional that two consecutive honorables would feature ES being ganged up on by gnats.... or maybe those are tsetse flies!

"A Sternly Worded Letter"

Debuted: 9/10/12

Image

After months of promotion, Fanny announced she was postponing the start of Decades! This made Vandal's Bored Protester quite peeved, and he called for an occupation. I suggested maybe a sternly worded letter was in order instead. That gave us this cute little avatar of ES's poor spelling and handwriting skills, as he let Fanny know that he was not amused over the delay in Decades! beginning. Of course, has the game even ended?

"Mud Wrestling"

Debuted: 10/21/12

Image

Christie posted concerns over an upcoming "team building exercise" she was being sent to that somehow involved wearing a bathing suit. The imaginations ran wild, and someone suggested it might involve Jell-O somehow. I suggested mud with this avatar, featuring christie and her obnoxious co-worker from last year who got the laptop closed on her beak going at it in the mud while referee Buster found employment after the NFL fiasco and sees to it that the fight is fair. Go team!!!

I hope that the Sprots appearances are confined here as well.

Or maybe we're done with them entirely. Hope hope hope . . .

"The Bib"

Debuted: 2/29/12

Image

Kiki, as she is sometimes wont to do, posted a few pics of the grandkids. The personalized bib on Harper caught my eye (Kiki has a thing for personalization, you know), and I felt compelled to draw up this avatar of ES sitting in a high chair with his own personalized bib. The mess and look of impending doom as he awaits his paddling are absolutely adorable. Don't believe me? This avatar might very well hold the distinction as the only solo ES avatar in history in which Sprots actually said it was adorable!

"Come To Ithaca"

Debuted: 5/24/12

Image

Anytime you being MBRS and Angel together, you know the result is going to be cute.... even if they're standing in the middle of beautiful downtown Ithaca. This avatar was inspired by lilclyde mentioning that both of Ithaca's major schools donated a school shirt to his fifth grade graduation, and Marley seeking to quash the rumor that there is nothing to do in his hometown. The girls in their designer Uggs and snowsquirrel under the northern lights is a picture perfect advertisement for the bustling metropolis... but just in case the message still wasn't clear, ES was sure to spell it out for everyone in yellow detail....

"Field of Broken Dreams"

Debuted: 8/11/12

Image

I normally don't consider my annual Hooly birthday tribute avatar for the countdown, but I couldn't not acknowledge the work and the result of this year's feature. Thanks to the effects I pumped into this one via Photoshop, it has the appropriate misty, surreal effect that is even better when viewed at larger scale. The theme of this avatar was inspired by the picture I used for tgirl during the April Fools 2010 pictorial rankings edition....

"Execution At 11:11"

Debuted: 10/7/12

Image

Frank's play he was writing which dealt with the death penalty was the inspiration behind this forboding avatar of ES about to get several thousand volts of electricity from Sprots, who apparently couldn't get ahold of any nuclear weaponry. A wide range of characters and emotions can be found in this avatar, but my favorite is still Father Buster reading ES his last rites out of a Bible he probably found in the dumpster of the Thirteenth Baptist Church....

"No, Ick, Repeat"

Debuted: 11/23/12

Image

Only ES would compare his works of art and Sprots' constant bashing of it to the same such bashing of highbrow entertainment like "The Shaytards" or Honey Boo Boo. The revolting grimace on Sprots, the repeated negative catchphrase in the background, and the eerie greenish glow of the computer screen all make this one worthy of a final nod in the year end countdown....

But not quite worthy of an encore showing and permanent recognition as a Top 20 winner. What 20 masterpieces from 2012 will make the cut, and become legendary images that will populate art textbooks in the 22nd century? Find out starting tomorrow, as we reveal each spot on the countdown daily.... with the crowning of the #1 ES avatar of 2012 on New Year's Eve! Stay tuned to this thread (ISE's permitting).......

For the record, all Sprots avatars are horrible.

To answer your question, Marley, these are still Honorable Mentions. "Real" countdown starts tomorrow.

#20. "Rainbow Bronco"

Debuted: 1/7/12

Image

The smack talk between Sprots, Pea and jeemie prior to the Denver Broncos matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the NFL playoffs last season inspired me to go anti-Stillers by using Rainbow Donkey as Denver's rally mascot. I replaced the white horse in the Broncos' D logo with Rainbow Donkey and created this avatar. The double-pixel black borderlines as well as the solid black background made this stand out from most of my other artwork, and was an instant hit with me (I even ordered a mug from my shop with this design on it!). As for the Broncos.... well, they won the game on a kinda exciting overtime play. I'm sure Tim Tebow thought Someone Else was responsible for that amazing victory, but we all know that kind of magic can only be supplied by rainbow unicorns....

I did love Rainbow Donkey and, with LB's permission, used him as my avatar whilst the Broncos were still in the playoffs.

I admit, I'm astonished that an avatar I was so happy with made the countdown and am hoping for continued pleasant surprises culminating in Sunchine!

I intend to use this one as my avatar during the playoffs unless I hear differently from LB citing copyright issues or downright meanness or something.

#19. "Let There Be Sunchine"

Debuted: 3/4/12

Image

Sprots' favored-to-win avatar never actually wins, but it also rarely falls this early. And if not for her tremendous support, I must say this avatar wouldn't have made the countdown at all. A chat typo of the word "sunshine" by silvercamaro led to the vision of this avatar featuring her dogs Lizbit and BeBe lounging in a ray of "sunchine" along with ES, all three in a pair of nifty shades. As much as I love the girls, especially Lizbit, I try not to let the characters involved influence my thoughts on an avatar... and while Sprots can find many things she absolutely adores about this little picture, its main appeals to me are merely the idea itself and the shading. A good avatar, but just not an elite one in my mind. Anyway, with how short the days are this time of year, it's nice that at least once more we can enjoy a little sunchine....

#18. "Welcome To SuperMecca!"

Debuted: 11/5/12

Image

ghost was distraught that one of her favorite local grocery chains was being bought out and converted over to Whole Foods. Where was she going to shop now to get all of her favorite items? Knowing ghost's feelings towards my employer Mecca, I came up with this cute little avatar of a frustrated ghost being welcomed to Mecca by the always cheerful and efficient ES, and being handed a smiley face sticker. As lovely as I think this avatar is on its own, what really makes it for me is the fact that ghost herself not only acknowledged it when she first saw it, but got its significance. I can almost forgive her for the later flap over her misunderstanding a throwaway comment on another subject....
