I'm 29, so that's before my time. HHH had a tinge of familiarity, and my best guess would have been correct for that reason. But no way would I have gone with that. I was surprised, at first, that he was able to use Houdini and not Weiss on his draft card.

That's not really how he "first attracted notice." He first attracted notice in the states. It may be in the first graf of his Wikipedia page, but that's more likely the reason the BAM writers and stackers thought this was a good question than it is proof this is something known even by magicians.

Okay, just got back from the magic shop and can confirm: nobody had ever heard of this, nor did it ring a bell for any of them after the answer was revealed. This includes a septuagenarian magic lifer and the proprietor of one of the most significant magic shops in America, among a couple assorted amateurs and professionals.
