Posting in NYC from my sister's new toy
I am lone in the world not in love w/I-Plod. And I do mean plod. Connectivity not so certain (big buildings & all sometimes block). Am I only person left loving real touch-typing keyboards? Ah, toys, toys.

My cell phone still has a cord and a rotary dial, so I am more Ludditish than you are! Ha!

I did not have a cellphone until 2004, and I am still using the flip phone I got then.

Re: Posting in NYC from my sister's new toy
Since we've all been calling it an Ipod all weekend, I have to sheepishly report that it's really an Ipad. I don't know if the actual pods have the picture of a keyboard, or teeny cell-phony keys, or a choice.
(I am not on it now, I'm on the ancient Toshiba laptop, which the relative she's taking care of will not let leave the house, & it's their machine so what they say goes, hence the need for the Ipad. As she points out, it is cheaper than a laptop by about $500.00. Keyboard on the ancient Toshiba laptop is enough of a chore, but at least you can actually touch-type on it, though it's so flat you hit a lot of wrong keys en route. Well, I do.
When I finally spring for a laptop of mine own, it's gonna be one of those Dells with the real have-depth-to-them keyboards; Dell is the only co that has those for laptops, I believe. Will weigh a ton.)
I've read whole treatises on how the latest gen of devices really don't want your active input, thanks, except for your simple click on what you buy. It's why input is very hard.
It was funny to turn on the microphone on the Ipad & watch it turn my comments into print, though, which we did not know it was going to do. Got a lot of spelling right (though not all), even the swear words.

I've seen iPads and they do look interesting to me, but not yet interesting enough to induce me to spring for one.

You'll be very popular if they ever bring back the Phone A Friend. They never allowed calls to cell phones.littlebeast13 wrote:Beebs52 wrote:ghostjmf wrote:I am lone in the world not in love w/I-Plod. And I do mean plod. lb says:
I knew you could post from an Ipad, but the technicalities still escape me. My sister found out you have to have a phone service that allows that already, at least theoretically, then tell the Ipad store what that phone service is & have then check it out & then set it up so it will work on the Ipad.
The cousin in NYC has Verizon for their landline & cell, & so we know Verizon works in the cousin's building for cells, so this Ipad is dedicated to Verizon. The store told my sister this cannot be changed if you change services. Doesn't sound right to me, but a lot of things that don't sound right are "how it works".
So when my sister goes back to Ohio, where her service for landline is AT&T, & for cell is a horrible small company she's going to get rid of, she will have to make choice. Hopefully, changing to Verizon for cell should make her able to still use the Ipad to connect to the internet. Or, even better, it will still continue to "ride" as being part of my cousin's cell & landline service. Believe me, cousin is never getting an Ipad (we're trying to persuade them that upgrading to I-phone with CIRI is the way for them to go, but they aren't there yet; they're still calling information for movie times, honestly!).
If it isn't feasible in some way for Ipad to work in Ohio to connect to the internet, then I may inherit it; my landline is Verizon but cell is currently T-Mobile. Prepaid, not contract. And even if I were to go over to Verizon for cell, I'd want the prepaid version (which costs roughly double T-Mobile's, but then it is alive in so many more locations than T-Mobile's). I am pretty sure it's your cell service they care about when allowing the Ipad to post, not landline.

Re: Posting in NYC from my sister's new toy
I do want to point out that my sister plans to hook this Ipad up to Skype so that she can call friends in Europe for free; currently, as she's at a relative's house, she has no access to her landline long distance plan, & has to wait for them to call her or spend a bundle.
(Neither her nor her friends are interested in the visual aspects of Skype, just the free voice calls).
Now, as far as I know, she could have hooked up Skype to the mandated-to-be-stationary laptop, so Ipad is still, dagblang it, mainly a new toy. If she's got Skype going on the Ipad as far as I know she should also be able to make calls to the rest of the USA on it as well. Which will make it a replacement for the battery-failing cell-phone on the same account that my cousin is still reluctant to replace.
