Nice job Dave!!!! I would say you were pretty much "running the board" for most of the game. Two trips out of the deal right? Have fun!!

Way to kick butt, David! You could see the frustration in the eyes of your so-called competition. Actually, Steve was pretty good, and it certainly helps when the other $ podium can provide some extra cover for you.

In contrast, I received my Croton watch the other day. It currently sits on my trophy shelf.

Great job, Dave! I was a little worried when you weren't on the show from the beginning (I didn't realize you were a Spoiler). Then you go to the podium, lost it, and got it back again.

One thing I have to ask: On the one clue where you were judged wrong (on AHOY, IIRC) elwing and I thought you had started spelling it right but were judged to have said the "H" first. A reply of our DVR was inconclusive, so we want to know what happened.

Thanks, everybody! It definitely was a thrill to finally get to see the show.

I was wondering what people would think of the "AHOY" bit. Actually, we'll never really know if I was gypped, because what you saw was a reenactment. When I answered the question the first time, what came out was a little bit more H-like than what you saw, but still more A-like than H-like, in my opinion. I caugt myself, and continued with H-O-Y, as I tried to recapture on the retake. There's no way I could have duplicated what I originally said--it was definitely not an H, but it wasn't exactly an A either.

The problem was, the computer operators heard it as A-H-O-Y, and typed that into the diagram, and the scores somehow got screwed up for that question and the one after it, so both those questions had to be reshot.

Particularly the time that woman spoiler got a question and was about to point to David, when she realized she had to take the other woman's podium because she had missed the question. Her expression was clearly, "Oh, not that one!"
BTW, David, what was with that "from Texas" introduction? Crosswords isn't even bothering with Jeopardy's "originally from" formulation for all you Californians? :P

I thought that was pretty funny, too.

I hope the spoiler tags aren't necessary anymore.

Thanks, Tim!

Marley, I was ready to give up my podium at that point, too. What a relief!

With 99% of the contestants being locals, the "originally" would have gotten pretty old. It's funny when they introduce somebody as "Jane Doe from England" and she has no trace of an English accent. Each contestant gets to approve their introduction, and can have them say whatever place they consider "home".

Wow! That was some remarkably "Martian" wagering there on the Crosswords Extras; nice that it worked out for you. An amazing win. Is that the highest total anyone has won yet?

I had already been spoiled about the results prior to watching the episode, and it seems that this somehow increased my anxiety while watching it, especially when you got exiled to the back row. "How is he gonna pull this one off?" And there were so many close calls, where some minor miracle prevented someone else from taking your podium.

I just watched your show and you were as fabulous as I knew you would be.

I hope that you and David will have fun on your trips!

Way to go, Dave! Very nice haul of cash and trips, and well deserved for some great play. I also loved the look of dejection when the female spoiler realized she couldn't take your podium. Oh noes!

What I was wondering was why your episode was held in the can so long. I thought the rules you were playing under with the Crossword Getaways and the $2k bonus round were replaced some time ago.

Anyway - again, great win and well done!

I'm glad you mentioned that part about the Crossword Getaways. I, too, thought they had done away with those. But since I only watch once in a while (primarily to catch BBs if they're on) I couldn't be certain.

I started going through various amounts to bet in my head. I didn't want to be too timid, but after I got to a certain point I thought, if I'm going to bet that much, I might as well bet it all. The other podium had $900, so I didn't think I would have much difficulty getting back in the lead if I missed it.

I had no idea what to do on the second wager. I think the number I picked was small enough to secure the lead if I missed it, but large enough to give me a respectable payday if I got it right. It's a good thing they didn't make NERO'S Circus or La BETE Humaine the Crossword Extra.

By the way, La VOIX Humaine is the name of an opera by Francis Poulenc based on a play by Jean Cocteau. I didn't actually know that at the time, but I knew I had seen that title somewhere!

I've only seen a couple of people finish the main game with totals higher than mine. One of them didn't complete the puzzle at the end. The other was recapped by Robert K S on the Jeopardy Board:
2008-02-15
Thad Novak, a graduate student from Illinois (a huge Cubs fan)
Karen Harrison, an executive assistant from Texas (is proud of her fantasy football league team, where the top players are women)
Spoilers:
Gary Heiner, a test engineer from California
Sally Hong, a dancer from Connecticut
Rich Muldofski, a psychiatrist from New York
Thad loses his podium in a spoil, but then gets it back, and risks $2500/$2800 on a Crossword Extra to start building a big bank. Sally spoils him again, but he gets it right back again. In the third round, Rich gets his podium, and Sally spoils from him. Sally bets $5000/$6600 on a Crossword Extra and gets it right! Thad wins it back again. On the last clue, Sally almost spoils on "Homely fruit?" but Thad rings in at the last instant to save with "ugli". He wins $12,100. Then he wraps up the game by finishing off the puzzle, setting a new record on the show.
Grand total: $17,100 + a trip to Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.
I don't recall any other higher finishers. I'm hoping there will be a Tournament of Champions--it seems likely that I would qualify.

I feel very fortunate to have pulled out the win. It's a very thrilling game to play--your heart's beating fast, and you never get a chance to relax. (Unless you're locked out, that is.) The final round is just perfect for me. I love picking up puzzles that somebody gave up on and finishing them off. Usually that involves fixing mistakes, so this show's version is a breeze!

Thanks!

They're airing episodes totally out of order for some reason. The episode that came on after mine, with Uly's Greed teammate Melissa Skirboll, was from the earliest batch of shows, with the old Ty haircut and the fixed-dollar, outside-the-puzzle Crossword Extras. I don't think it was a re-run, because I would have remembered her.

So, Melissa's show aired after yours here in the LA market? They called her a couple of weeks ago and told her the air date, but she forgot it. And she didn't want to watch it. I am looking forward to seeing it. She did tape it a long time ago.
I believe in the usefulness of useless information.

I got to the tape from yesterday. Awesome performance, David, on both knowledge and wagering. Spend the $$ well and enjoy the trips!
