Wireless router help needed

#1 Post by ne1410s » Thu Mar 06, 2008 8:45 am

This pops up at the bottom of laptop:

WINDOWS-SYSTEM ERROR

"There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network"

Does this mean someone is piggybacking on my wireless router? How can I prevent this?

TIA

That could be but that's probably not the cause of your error.

You don't say what your router make and model are, but I assume it has DHCP so should be dynamically assigning new addresses to whoever comes in.

Of course you set security on your router so no one else can come in, right? :)

When I saw this error it usually meant that someone has assigned a fixed IP address to a specific machine and when the DHCP server went to assign the address, it was in conflict as you cannot have two machines in the same subnet with the same IP addresses. Sometimes, the DHCP server will error and try to assign the same IP address to two different machines. Sometimes, one system will not release its IP address if it has held on to it for longer than the renew time. What you should do, on the laptop, open a DOS window (type CMD on the START/RUN line) and type in the following:

ipconfig /release

Then reboot the laptop and see if gets a new IP address from your router.

If that doesn't work, you will have to locate the machine with which there is a conflict and do the above for that machine.

No. Everytime I've tried, I get blocked too.

Thanks for answering, sirge. I will give that a try.

I can always go to SYSTEM RESTORE as I have dozens of times previously, right?

You should not have to do that. It is not a critical error.

That's the same one I have. I've never had that problem.

Sounds like you're not using the Linksys application to connect. Why not?

Click on Network Connections then left click once on your wireless connection. Left click on "Repair this connection" in the box on the left. It will go through a lot of steps. If that doesn't work, you're going to have to connect to your router and start checking things.

Oh, I'm leaving for the day in 20 minutes, so you're on your own after that.

I have a very similar router, and so does my dad. The two things that have worked for me when I've been having trouble are:
- Unplug it. Wait 5 minutes. Plug it back in.
- Upgrade the router's firmware. There are instructions on how to do that here: http://tinyurl.com/22y3ec

Good luck!

I fixed my Dad's internet this summer by resetting his modem (you have to turn the modem off for a good long time to get it to re-assign a new IP address to the router) and updating his router's firmware. He was ready to spend the money to replace his ethernet card, which wouldn't have helped. I just wanted the wireless network to work on my laptop, so I was playing around with the network, and when I was done, I checked and Dad's internet connection worked fine. This all happened while he was out. So I played dumb for a while. "Dad, I just emailed you something you need to see. Can you check it?" "I can't. My internet connection doesn't work" "Are you sure? You might want to check..."

I hadn't thought about it until I saw your post, so I thought I 'd better check the firmware on my own router. Sure enough there was an update, so I installed it, and it played all kinds of hell with my router - changed my router's IP address (to one that conflicted with the modem), renamed my wireless network to "linksys", lost the password, etc. Took me forever to get everything back working again. Phooey.

Is the problem resolved? If so, how did you resolve it?
