Idol Chatter Guys 3/4/08

#1 Post by Ritterskoop » Tue Mar 04, 2008 7:55 pm

Spring break this week so no class, so I got to watch the show live.

LUKE - Wham - Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go - good choice for him but it was cruise ship. Points for trying the high note. C

DAVID A. - Phil Collins - Another Day in Paradise - big points for playing the piano - shouldn't have done another ballad, though he proved with "Shop Around" he could do fluffy - he could sing the phone book - A-

DANNY - Soft Cell - Tainted Love - perfect song choice but the band overpowered his vocals too often. Very theatrical, leather jacket. B

DAVID H. - Air Supply (later Celine Dion) - It's All Coming Back to Me Now - good song choice but only adequate delivery - points for degree of difficulty - Jim Steinman would've made him sound bigger. B+

MICHAEL - Simple Minds - Don't Forget About Me - I was underwhelmed, but I'm not a fan of the song anyway. He was more interesting than the original, somehow. B+

DAVID C. - Hello - Lionel Richie - the beginning was atrocious, but I loved the rock treatment of a ballad - he actually can sing - B+

JASON C. - Jeff Buckley (later k d lang) - Hallelujah - my heart stopped when I realized what he was attempting, but he managed it - even his dropped breath at the end was endearing. A-

CHIKEZIE - Luther Vandross - She Builds Me Up - rough beginning but turned pretty good. B+

Wow, you are really on top of things!

Chickezie was barely done when you posted this.

I can't stand Danny. But with the VFTW crowd, he will still be there.

Oh well.

I thought this was the best week for the guys thus far. Many of the song choices are in the top tier of my home jukebox.

In order of preference:

David C - One of my favorites; I thought he did a great job turning it into a rock ballad.

David A. - We all know he can sing. I want to see him rock a little.

David H. (I feel like I'm getting redundant with the Davids) - Another great song choice. I didn't know anyone did it besides Celine Dion.

Michael - Another of my all-time favorites. I thought this was his best performance to date. And, I have to laugh when Simon shows his lack of knowledge with the bands / singers. Michael Hutchins was in INXS and this song was done by Simple Minds, lead singer Jim Kerr.

Chikezie - I enjoyed this song. Good choice for him.

Jason - Nice song but I wasn't crazy about it.

Luke - I thought he should have gone with something more Glenn Frey or Don Henley as he has that range to his voice. George Michael was a bit out of reach for him. This came off as "very Karaoke."

Danny - Great song, but not for him. I didn't like it at all.

Based on tonight's performances I would send Danny and Luke home.

Pretty good job by the guys overall.

1-DAVID COOK-"Hello". The surprise of the night. At the start, I thought I was going to hate it, but I actually wound up really enjoying his take on it. He made me like a song I never did before. A-
2-CHIKEZIE EZE-"All the (Wo)man I Need". This was nice, smooth and soulful. Stuff it, Simon. A-
3-JASON CASTRO-"Hallelujah". Nice song choice! A little rough on the landing, otherwise a terrific, emotional performance. A-
4-MICHAEL LEE JOHNS-"Don't You (Forget About Me)". No major mistakes, but lacking that little something extra to take it to the top. B+
5-DAVID ARCHULETTA-"Another Day in Paradise". Second week in a row with a "serious" song. He should do something fun and upbeat next week. First time I've heard pitch issues with him. Not his best effort, but still good overall. B
6-LUKE MENARD-"Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go". Decent overall effort. I wasn't overwhelmed, but he did no harm to it. B
7-DAVID HERNANDEZ-"It's All Coming Back to Me Now". Mostly non-descript performance. A couple of good moments on sustained notes, and some adventures in offkey land as well. This could hurt him when coupled with the revelations of his prior career choices. C
8-DANNY NOREIGA-"Tainted Love" Just bad, from the mincing and prancing to the vocal tribute to William Hung. D

I'm hoping voters have had enough of danny. I think it'll be two out of my #6, 7, & 8 above. I would've had David Cook on the chopping block tonight, but he may have saved himself with that performance tonight. MAYBE.

My standings through Week 3:

David A. 29 pts.
Chikezie 28 pts.
Jason 25 pts.
Michael, David C. & David H. 24 pts.
Luke 20 pts.
Danny 10 pts.

My bad. Air Supply and Celine both did "Making Love out of Nothing at All" - not this one.

Luke: First thought: the wrong guy is singing this. Shouldn't Danny or David A. or (given the recent news) David H. be singing it? Then after the catty me left, I had my second thought: God, I hate this song. Third thought: I still hate falsetto singing. Fourth thought: GOD, do I hate this song. Fifth thought: It was almost cruise-ship caliber. Almost. D-.

David A: I still don't get him. He's OK, but still nothing special. I'd give him a B, practically B- or C.

Danny: Hey, he IS singing that godawful "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go"...oh, wait, it's "Tainted Love". I agree with Simon about the arrangement. He gets props for not singing anything falsetto. Negative points for the bad dancing. B-: I liked his voice, hate his personality.

David H.: Have I mentioned my hatred of falsetto yet? Yes? Oh, then I'll just give him the C- he deserved. Hate the song, his voice is nothing special, and a bit nasally in parts, pitchy in other parts, strong in one or two notes. Blah.

Michael: He did OK on the verses, but the bridge was horrendous. He screamed a few notes, but so far, he's the best of the bunch. B. (I liked the song choice for him, but I think a better choice would have been either "New Sensation" or "Devil Inside" to push the fact that he's Michael Hutchence, Jr.)

David C.: Liked the arrangement a lot (although I hate the song), but hated hated hated the ending and his voice strained in several places. I'm mostly afraid he's starting to use the guitar as a crutch, but on the whole, a solid B.

Jason: One of my all-time favorite songs. He actually could have used the guitar, though. His voice was perfect for it, too. I still hate his hair, and then there was the botched falsetto (DEAR GOD, MAKE IT STOP WITH THE FALSETTO ALREADY!). A- (almost an A, if not for the pitch problems on the falsetto.)

Chikezie: Doing great until (do I have to say it?) the #*$&ing falsetto section. He ALMOST made me forgive him for it, though. B.

If it were entirely up to me, Luke and David H. would be history.

I think the Michael Hutchence comment was due to his Australian-ness, not the song. He's very Hutchence-esque, too, vocally.

Well, it was Randy who said it, not Simon, but I agree with Sir G that he was confusing who sang the song, congratulating him for doing an INXS song, although he never actually said that.

A likely coincidence: Last week they replayed David A.'s connection w/ Kelly Clarkson from six years ago. We know about Kelly's lean toward serious material (My December) and now David A. is singing serious kind of stuff too! Did Kelly pass something on? This all may change next week.

Useless stat: The Phil Collins song was #1 the week Jordin Sparks was born. That makes us feel old!

NOW I've got it.

"It's All Coming Back to Me Now" was by Meatloaf in the 80s. The Jim Steinman connection is everywhere.

Luke has to go for sure. I think Danny can survive a few more weeks. I see Chikezie leaving also this week.

David A. gets no votes from me tonight. David C. saved himself. To make "Hello" listenable was well done.

Tuesday is such a rough night for me with a bunch of other things going on, so I never see more than a couple snatches here and there (I try to tune into the end for the recaps at least).

I did see the first one (Luke) and I thought it was pretty good, for what it was. I was afraid he would go last week and was happy that I'd get at least one more week of the odd Hugh Jackman/Orlando Bloom combo to look at. Sadly, I think this is curtains for Hulando, even though I actually thought he was one of the better ones.

Didn't see the kid that everybody thinks is so great and I just don't get. He constantly has this look on his face that he's either on the verge of tears or the verge of a poop, but I can't really tell which (maybe both).

Danny Dictator (can't remember which one, he'll always be Lupe Extravaganza to me) was too bad for words. I couldn't even tell that was supposed to be Tainted Love. What with all the head snaps and hip shoots and pursed lips, his performance was better suited to a teenage girl with in front of the mirror practicing her fiercest America's Next Top Model move.

I was also not impressed with his disgusting My Space Christmas rant.

David Hello: There's just something about him that slimy and gives me the creeps. I also don't like how he always drags out the guitar which adds nothing to his performance, yet Castro (my fave) gets knocked for it. In this setting, accompanying yourself on acoustic makes sense. Dragging out the electric if you're not fronting a band makes no sense.

David Stripper: In my opinion, nobody can touch Meatloaf on this (but I don't think anybody can touch Meatloaf on most things. He's one of the greatest singers ever, in my opinion), but I think he did better than Celine Dion did with it. Obligatory Nuggets' reference: the lady who duets with him on this song sang the anthem earlier this year. Marion Raven, maybe? Probably my fave anthem singing of the season.

Jason Dreads: I didn't see enough to tell, did he do Cohen's original or Buckley's? From the solo guitar, I assumed Buckley. My fave version of this is by John Cale, which is where Buckley got his arrangement, although he changed some of the lyrics. I don't know why I was surprised that Cohen cleared this, since he pretty much lets any movie or television show that sends him an email do it. Ha! Although I really like him, the snippet I saw of this wasn't that great, but maybe that's because the songs means something to me. Best version that you wouldn't think would be: Bon Jovi!

Didn't see enough of the black guy to glean anything other than he was doing Luther VanDross. And I pretty much don't like anybody doing LV other than LV. What with the Hathaway last week, I think he's trying to ride of the strength of the originals instead of making something for himself.

Totally forgot about Michael John Hutchence. Which I guess says it all. I can't imagine what will happen when he actually does an INXS song, since he's trying toohard as it is. Let's hope the universe doesn't actually implode or something.

Doesn't help that I know a Mike Johns, who is like a 6 1/2 foot cop. So this guy just always seem like a pale little poser.

LUKE - Wham - Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go

Excellent choice! Great song for his abilities. That song just oozes 80's cheese. And he was so pleasantly sucky singing it. Goodbye Luke. You are cute but outclassed.

DAVID A. - Phil Collins - Another Day in Paradise

This kid has such a beautiful voice, but he is fast becoming Fern's favorite. It's like it's Idol Gives Back every day for this guy. He is like vanilla ice cream. Really good premium vanilla ice cream with maybe even the bean specks in it. But I like Chunky Monkey.

DANNY - Soft Cell - Tainted Love

They tell you to know who you are, then Danny comes out all knowing who he is and they blast him for it. We'll probably have to watch this for at least another week because he's not as bad as some of the others and at least he's entertaining rather than oogy. And he can actually sing if you're not too distracted by all his other mess going on.

DAVID H. - Air Supply (later Celine Dion) - It's All Coming Back to Me Now

The meatloaf sing Meat Loaf. Heheh. Still has a very good voice; still has cheesy performance value. He really DOES sing like a stripper, if there is such a thing. I don't think the judges' praise helped him any, because he really needs sympathy votes. I think he's gone, even though he's a good singer. This performance had no "wow."

MICHAEL - Simple Minds - Don't Forget About Me

Jim Kerr has such a deep rich voice and this guy does not. He actually reminds me more of Eddie Vedder vocally. Once again, he seems to have it all going for him, but some key ingredient is missing. It was entertaining enough and he should stay.

DAVID C. - Hello - Lionel Richie

I was so set to leave the room because the guy I can't stand to watch was going to sing a song I can't stand to hear. They are both so creepy. The beginning was noisy and discordant, but he pulled it together into something that was actually good. At least they didn't pull that "you are such an original artist" bs like they did with Daughtry since the song had been redone by a rock group, but he did a good job with it.

JASON C. - Jeff Buckley (later k d lang) - Hallelujah

You know how you hate to get up in front of a class and present your paper but you know you have to or you'll fail? That's how I feel this competition is for this guy. It's like he's too painfully shy to deal with the actual performing, and they took away his guitar so he didn't have anything to hide behind. I adore him and I was agonizing along with him and it wasn't great but it was very real. So I'm glad the judges liked it. Or loved it in Simon's case. This kid is no diva.

CHIKEZIE - Luther Vandross - She Builds Me Up

Chikezie has a real nice voice, but he sings such boring stuff most of the time. I guess he's gone if David H. isn't.

I was looking forward to 80's week and it didn't materialize as the great cheddarfest I had imagined. I hope the girls pick more memorable stuff to play with!

Thanks, mini. That's how I feel about his voice. There is something always missing but I just couldn't put my finger on it. Perhaps he needs to send it through a reverb chamber or a Leslie or something. It's like he has a two dimensional voice. There's no depth to it.

And, now that I think about it, I do remember Meat's version of It's All Coming Back to Me now.

Loved

DAVID C. - Hello - I loathe the song, but he made it interesting. Although I hate his hair, I have liked him from the beginning because he seems so genuinely iconoclastic. But, if I like him he won't win.

JASON C. - Hallelujah - He had a really nice interpretation of the song. Every time I see him, I just want to hold him down and cut his hair.

Liked

MICHAEL - Don't Forget About Me - I guess Simple Minds has the definitive version and he strayed too much for me to love him. He doesn't suck.

Loathed
DANNY - Tainted Love - He ruined the song and it's such a good song.

LUKE - Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go - I hate the song and I disliked his performance of this already bad song.

Indifferent
CHIKEZIE - She Builds Me Up

DAVID A. - - Another Day in Paradise - I don't like Phil Collins and I don't think that he is particularly special. Why are they trying to pimp him out.

DAVID H. - Air Supply (later Celine Dion) - He is interchangable with the David A to me. The only thing that makes him interesting is his "past" but I hate the song.

Very funny.

I went to iTunes to buy a copy of David Cook's song from last night, but it won't be available until tomorrow.

There is an interesting disclaimer on iTunes:

American Idol contestants are presented here in alphabetical order. iTunes and Fox are committed are committed to presenting contestants in a fair and balanced manner online and on-air. For this reason, sales of performances from American Idol contestants from the current season will not be reflected in the iTunes charts.

If you know how well the artist/songs are selling, you can't be manipulated by producers into thinking that your contestant might go.

I assume that the artists get a portion of the profits from the sales. If they don't know how many songs they sell, then Fox may not have to pay them as much.

Ok, I went on Idol to buy Jason Castro and David Cook's singles, but "Hello" isn't up yet. I stated clicking through everyone and all of their singles are up from this week, but David's is not.

I found David Cook's single, but it's not sorted properly, you just can't click on his name from the Idol site and get his single. You have to do a search for "Hello" to find it.
