March Lyrically Speaking - A Brand New (kinda) Game
So I guess people figure that an old game is better than none at all. Those with very good memories will have a leg up here. I started wading through my crazy notes Saturday, so I will start it tomorrow.
It will be interesting. I must've wrote explanations and openings when I posted the game, so I don't have those to go by. I also apparently thought that since I was writing the bonuses that I knew them already, since I didn't put any answers. Ha! Since I just put answers in a board post, I need to make sure that I'm right on what I'm answering now.
Some of the days are incomplete, or if I had titles written down (on some of them I just have lyrics), sometimes the lyrics don't match so I must've changed horses midstream. I also have a couple days missing, but one of them is a Monday, so no problems there.
I'll post the rules and explanations once I see if I need to change anything in it to reflect differences (like I think I reference Pacific time as board time).

Just so I didn't erase anything important or by editing it no longer made sense, I just put updates and changes in bold.
March’s Lyrically Speaking game will run from Tuesday, March 4 to Sunday, March 30. Final standings will be posted on the morning of Monday, March 31, in order to give the winner (if close enough to where the last day matters) one whole day to prepare for April.
1. Each day’s game will be posted in the A.M. Given the goofy times I am around, that means anytime after midnight Eastern time. All times referenced herein will be Eastern time.
2. Each game will remain open until the following midnight. While this may be less than 24 hours, the late, late birds will have already had a crack at it when it was newly posted. If, for some reason, I do not get the game posted by 7:00 A.M. of a particular day, I will state the end time in that game’s post. The weekend game will be open until 7:00 A.M. Monday morning to give the people who only have computer access (are there any? If not, this might change) during the week a chance to play.
I’m going to change this to 24 hours, I kept the QOD games open longer and I would get a day or so behind in scoring because of the overlaps. So, it will just be a flat 24 hours. In the case of the weekend game, 7 am Eastern time on Monday morning will be the cutoff, since 5 am my time is about the earliest I’d be posting, anyway.
3. Barring unforeseen circumstances, answers and updated standings will be posted by noon the following day. More likely, they will be up in the early morning, but I’m leaving room in case it doesn’t work out time wise for me. I know people like to see the answers and where they stand, so I will work hard to try and do that daily. That being said, I think the scoring will be much more time consuming than making up the actual games, so we’ll see.
4. What you’ve all been waiting for:
Metal Monday - This can also include hard rock, acid rock, heavy metal and hair bands.
Surprise Tuesday - You never know what you’re gonna get…
Wacky Wednesday - Novelty tunes, tv themes, weird stuff, maybe even some one hit wonders.
Theme Thursday - Each Thursday will have a different theme, the discovery of which will be part of that day’s contest.
Old Fart Friday - Stuff your parents probably know, except you’re not allowed to call them for help. Frank Sinatra, heck, the whole Rat Pack, pop standards, even earlier traditional tunes.
Country & Western Weekend - Yee haw! My knowledge of C&W generally goes from the 50’s to about 1983, but I’ll try and find some modern stuff, too.
No, I’m not copying lb from the last game. I had it first. Ha!
5. There will be no years this month, as that would mean I’d have to figure out where to look to get them. Instead, each day (except Thursday) will have a bonus song to figure out. An instrumental bonus song to figure out. No lyrics, but you will be given some clues. The bonuses will not follow the themes, it could be Bach, it could be John Williams. It could be Song Without Words. But it will be an instrumental. On Thursdays, getting the theme will be the points normally reserved for the Bonus Instrumental.
The previous games must have had a name the year theme to them for bonuses, which would involved research on my part. I guess that's why I came up with the instrumentals.
6. Points as follows:
Song - 10 points
Artist - 10 points
Get them all - 10 point bonus
Bonus instrumental or theme - 10 points
In regards to the artist - Remakes or covers are acceptable if they fit the theme (if any) and were well known. This will be determined on a case by case basis, but you are encouraged to go with whoever did the best known or more popular version. Picking some obscure artist who recorded Yesterday as a filler track will not count. The Beatles will. Giving Pat Boone as the artist on Metal Monday won’t count. Judas Priest will.
I’ve always liked to do points by the 10s instead of 1s, that way I can give half credit for something that’s close, but no cigar. Although the single point difference were more exciting in the previous game, I think I’ll keep it this way.
7. There could be extra lyrics at an odd time, bonus doubler points within the game, who knows. Or there might not. Depends on whether something strikes me as a good extra.
8. No cheating, looking up either a song or artist, calling your grandma or bugging the old stoner down the block.
9. I’ve obviously forgotten stuff, but that can be addressed as it occurs. If there’s some glaring error or horrible oversight here, please let me know.
10. Unless I have to add some things, there obviously won't be any songs from the last 5 years. So there's a clue to get you started. Ha!

Here is the list of players from the original run. They're in alphabetical order so you can't tell how anybody finished. I think it will be fun to see how people do now as opposed to then. As well as how many players aren't around and how many new ones have appeared since then.

Now that I'm in the groove of this LS thing I guess I'll have to give fanny's version a shot. Spring Break comes right in the middle, so there's a strong possibility that I'll miss a few days -- but, oh well!

This was August, 2002. I was thinking about posting each day's scores from the original when I post the scores from this run, but I don't think most people would give a crap since there are so many that aren't around and/or wouldn't be playing.starfish1113 wrote:When did you do that last one, Fanny?
There are a bunch of "Where Are They Now" names on that list, some of which I completely forgot about until I saw the list.
Also, a bunch of the people still around are not regular LS players anymore. It'll be interesting to see if they come back and play.
