So my name translated to Grace Grace. Boring . . .

My middle name is David, and unfortunately when I sign my name the "D" sometimes looks like an "O", so some people have thought my initials might be "SOB".

My mother, though, really had it bad. Her FIRST name was "Edgar" - her father was so certain that she was going to be a boy that he already had the name picked out and stuck her with it (it was his first name also). Her middle name was "Delphene" (yes, with an "e" rather than an "i"). She went by "Dee" all her life. Her second husband's last name was "Sine", so at the end of her life she was "Dee Sine".

I asked the front desk person if she is the one I tell that although my name is Gloria, that I am called Lynn. I would like to be called Lynn by the doctor and the staff. I told her I do know when someone calls me Gloria, that they are talking to me, and I also feel like they don't know me.

I want to feel like my doctor and staff knows me.

She said she would tell the nurse. If she doesn't, I will.

Fun middle name story:

My mom had three kids and her labours got shorter with each one. I'm the eldest, and mine was 16 minutes. With the youngest, she didn't even have labour. She just felt weird and the doctor, knowing her quick release moves, said 'get to the hospital!'. My dad was still looking for a place to set down her suitcase and she was already finished and smoking a cigarette (ah, the good old days!).

Had they been a few minutes later, my brother (who escaped being named Leadville when my Dad discovered Craig, Colorado) would have had the middle name Ransom, because he would have been born in a '54 Olds Holiday.

Anyone who was ever in HR hates hyphenated names! How do you sort them? Some women change after a while from Mary Ann Smith-Jones to Mary Ann Smith Jones -- what a mess!

First names aren't so bad -- it's the last name for filing and sorting purposes I'm whining about.

I tried to make my last names unhyphenated when I got married. My last names didn't need to modify each other.

For instance Helena Bonham Carter. She is alphabetized under Bonham and has no hyphen.

The credit card companies didn't get that I didn't want hyphens. I would cut up the credit cards they sent, until they got it right.

To this day, we call the heavy duty scissors in our house the credit card scissors.

My older sister is Linda Michelle

Leah came close to being Leah Michelle, as a tribute to her Grandpa, Michael Leo -- but we wanted to honor Keith's family as well. So she's Leah Louise after Keith's Mom, Evelyn Louise -- she already has quite a few "Evelyn" namesakes, including Keith's oldest sister (called Sissy) and Sissy's daughter, called Candy. Louise is also well-represented in my family -- Grandma was Elizabeth Louise, and her Mom, who came over on the boat from Poland in 1891, was Ludvika, which is "Louisa."

Dad was also commemorated by my nephew Michael Eugene (after both Grandpas.) And my sister said the if she'd had a son instead of only girls, they would have named him Leo. Since her married name is Frankil, that brought up terrible thoughts of the Leo Frank trial & lynching! She wasn't familiar with the story before, & now figures it's probably a good thing she didn't have a boy named Leo!

I'm the third girl born. The first is Carole Ann (Ann is our mother's name), the 2nd's middle name is our dad's mom's maiden name. Somehow my first name came from a 1st cousin of daddy's. On occasion Daddy would call me by my first and middle name, but not very often. No one else EVER did. He used Carole Ann a lot, though none of the rest of us ever picked up on it.

That's how Mini-me got Andrew--we ran out of family boy names (well, not really, but my mother was German and her favorite brother was named Horst Ludwig, and we weren't going there....) and there was a preponderance of Anns, so he became Andrew. Then my m-i-l had a minor snit when I didn't give Erin the middle name Ann. Too darned bad.
