This Day In Bored History

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Fri Feb 29, 2008 8:45 am

February 29, 2004 - I discover the trick to acheiving quick multiple recs on a single post without having to switch handles. I remember it was one of flock's (rare non-political) posts I ran up to some insane number in a few short minutes for the first on-Bored test....

Unfortunately, since that classic Go format was only going to be around for 3 more months, the Rec Fairy didn't get too much time to utilize "her" talent....

Why did I think BiT was the RecFairy?
Enough already. It's my fault! Get over it!

That'll be $10, please.

In honor of the occasion, as well as leap day, let the bell ring 29 times!

Forgive my ignorance, but what is "REC" anyway?

Surely there must be a way to bring the Rec feature to the Raspberry Bored! 8)

Short for recommend, it was a way of saying "Here, here" or "amen" to a post just by clicking on a box.

If it were not somewhat tautologic, I would REC this post.

BTW for those even more new than me (only six years plus, and counting, here), the classic format from the era in which ABC and Go.com were trying to convergence the Internet and TV had boreds for every ABC program, including a long-forgotten program called Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, hosted by Regis Philbin, which earned the company over a billion dollars in a short period of time. I know not from experience the details of that era, but in the year 2001, I found myself reading that Bored, with many of the current participants, and many others, and appreciating the individual characters greatly. At that time, the right side of the screen for the table of posts, when in individual post mode, had two columns, one for number of times read, and one for number of times recommended. In December 2001, that Bored and many others disappeared instantly.

I found myself missing dreadfully this whole range of characters with whom I had never interacted except as a lurker.

I knew there were a number of alternate places where meetings were held, although I did not know whether any were public. In the course of searching, I found many strange corners of the Internet, although IMHO the only places I found a similar range of erudition and eccentricity were a couple of public boreds devoted to classical music.

It was not the same, though.

Then I found, almsost miraculously, that the whole kit and caboodle of the Go bored had been reconstituted as a local bored on an LA station (QV search "love boat" era, for the skinny). I felt I had to meet and learn from the participants - you participants, and I had to join. So, a couple of days before Christmas 2001, I did. I may or may have not been the first real recruit to the love boat. I am not sure.

And, for the next couple of years, until the software designers took away that crucial right column, I found myself ticking "post recommended" in the appropriate box many and many and many times. A few times, my posts got some recs in return.

Now, aside from the very nice puns involved by the new merry man who has - as it were - chimed in within this thread, there are two further points. The very many verses of Lightfoot's "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" gave ample option for LS hosts to use it frequently, and it may at one time have been the most frequent song used on LS. I dont think beastie or anyone else keeps a book on that, though.

And, finally, there is great love for the commissioner of baseball here, especially from beastie, whose beloved Cardinals' division was invaded by Mr. Selig's Brewers in the 1990's (IIRC). And the private half of the team which in 1970 had brought back MLB to Milwaukee, providing the support of the real local moneyed class to the effort fronted by Mr. Selig, was none other than......

Edmund Fitzgerald. Son of the man the boat was named after.

This was supposed to be a three line post.

You can't do it!

Well, you can, and have, but it's not the sort of thing we'd ever ask of you.

Hmmmmm... that gives me an idea. Maybe I can sell the naming rights to my good friend's sunken ship. Soon we'll be singing about The Wreck of the Geico Insurance Freighter, and I'll have more money to use for future Congressional bribes....

November 30, 2001 at approximately 8:00 EST to be precise, but it was December GMT. As I recall, the only Boreds to survive were Alias, Once and Again, and all the forgotten Boreds (Madigan Men, YDKJ, The Beast [Loved that one!], etc.... and these dead Boreds met their demise 4 days later).

You were. In fact, I think you were the only true newbie to join us (or at least delurk) in the Love Boat era until HoltDad came aboard in Fall 2002....

Interstingly enough, I didn't use it this year, though I have sometime in the past, and I know others have worn it out. It is definitely an LS favorite....

Single game tickets went on sale this morning for the Cards. I got all 17 games worth I wanted half an hour after they went on sale. The previous 2 years, it would take several hours just to crack through the virtual waiting room to order a few tickets. You can just cut the excitement about this year's team around here with a plastic butter knife....

Diet Dr Pepper is my beverage of choice in the soda department.

Too bad you can't get it at a restaurant.
