I kept trying to make this about jail, inability to escape, trapped -- whatever. Then started humming "On the Boardwalk in Atlantic City", and voila!

Yup. Their followup to "Hush". This was with Rod Evans as lead singer, before the vocalist most associated with Purple, Ian Gillan, took over.
The Purp's significantly more raucous version scraped the lower region of the Top 40 in late '68.
