February 27 QoD -- "Trademarks"

#1 Post by NellyLunatic1980 » Wed Feb 27, 2008 4:50 am

Top o' the mornin'® to everybody! Yes, I know, that's earendel's trademark. I'm just using that to introduce the very first round of my third installment of the QoD, which will be on trademarks. Not Bored trademarks, but actual trademarks. So many words in our everyday conversations are brand names or registered trademarks. Below is a list of common English words. You must tell me if they are currently "trademarked" or not. Each correct yes/no is worth 1 point. The bonus is worth 5 points.

This question is open until Thursday at 6 PM Eastern.

1. Styrofoam
2. Lucite
3. Velcro
4. Uzi
5. Aspirin
6. Zamboni
7. Galoshes
8. Rayon
9. Teflon
10. Maraschino
11. Cellophane
12. Kevlar
13. Popsicle
14. Polyester
15. Formica

BONUS
Spandex

Trademark in the US or anywhere? At least one comes to mind that varies from place to place.

Trademark anywhere, but I will give credit for any name that can legally be answered with both yes and no. One name can indeed be both yes and no, and that was intentional.

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
