The 2011 ES Avatar Countdown!

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Fri Dec 09, 2011 8:57 am

Before we begin with the presentation, I'd like to once again go over the criteria I generally used for ranking these avatars this year....

QUALITY: Does the avatar actually look visually appealing?

INSPIRATION: Was the inspiration particularly timely or clever? Was it introduced to the Bored in a notable or interesting way?

REACTION: Did the avatar receive any BB commentary other than a token Found It? (Note, while an important part of the ranking process, it is just a part.... this isn't an all-request list)

DIVERSITY: Is there a similar themed avatar that is better? As intriguing as Snaxx's list was, a countdown of all Sprots/ES avatars would be boring and anti-climactic. This countdown reflects as much of the spectrum of where my inspiration took me this past year as I could possibly work in.

ARTIST'S OPINION: Finally, what are my thoughts on the avatar? I am my own best and worst critic, and my own feelings about these avatars held a lot of sway on what made the cut and where it was ranked.

While the official Top 20 does not begin until Monday, today and through the weekend, let's give one last hurrah to 15 of the finest that didn't quite make the cut.... and it's not a disgrace to only rate an honorable mention this year. There were 120 avatars eligible for consideration for this year's countdown, and many really good ones didn't even make this year's list. Many of these avatars that rated only an honorable seemed destined for Top 10 notoriety, and likely would have reached that level in a past year....

I took the 15 honorables, assigned them a 1, 2, or 3 based on their chronological order, and will post them over the next 3 days based on their number. Today, all of those assigned #1 will be displayed. I'll include an image of each avatar, it's title, debut date, and a brief description (I'll try not to merely parrot my description from the archive). Once we get to the Top 20, that day's avatar of honor will also be uploaded as my avatar that day.....

Here we go..... the first five honorable mentions for 2011:

"My Yellow Valentine"

Debuted: 1/20/11

Image

One of the most underrated Sprots/ES avatars I have ever drawn, and my personal favorite of the saga from the entire year. Here ES wrote his feelings towards his beloved Sprotsie Baby in the snow. ES's signature shit-eating grin is nice, but it's Sprots' expression that really makes this one for me. It isn't mad or angry or shocked or any of her normal reactions to her favorite mangy rodent. It's like, "You've got to be kidding me! What is he going to do next?"

"On Furlough"

Debuted: 4/8/11

Image

Rainbow Donkey's long awaited return to ES avatars! He hadn't appeared at all since he was laughed off the Bored in the Spring of 2009. Here, RD is shown out of work as the anticipated government shutdown caused me to put all non-essential characters on furlough. I loved the colorfulness of this avatar when I drew it and I still love it now. I never thought I'd be bidding this avatar farewell in early December rather than the final week, but it's been a tough year....

"Dick in a Box"

Debuted: 5/14/11

Image

One of those crazy ideas that Fanny came up with in chat one night, it took months before I finally drew it. ES's tribute to the legendary SNL sketch played out in a theater much to the amusement of MBRS and the horror of Angel. The darkened scene, light radiating from the projector, and the mess on the floor were all pulled off well.

"Bedtime For Fanny"

Debuted: 8/8/11

Image

A chat vision that was not sanctioned by Fanny for avatar use, but a blatant attempt at gratuitous cuteness by me. With shoutouts to earlier avatars ("Laker Socks" and "Hey Doll!") and another wonderful job of pulling off a dark scene, this one is so darn cute, you almost forget to ask why she's sucking her thumb instead of rubbing her sleepy eyes (Oops!)

"Happy Hoolyween"

Debuted: 10/31/11

Image

A third straight honorable with a dark scene! Hooly gets the nod as the witch over MBRS for my Halloween tribute due to my late October squirrel boycott. Well executed, well rendered, visually pleasing.... I miss not getting to draw Hooly more often.

Nothing gets a parade going like threatening MM's with pink slips. Just look at the Occupy the Bored thread.... :P

Cripes! I better get on the stick and get my list finalized. I know I don't do honourable mentions (other than heckling yours), but do I also make a top 20 or just my top 10? I'm thinking 20 but I don't remember for sure....

I'm pretty sure you had a Top 20 last year, unless I just happened to hit all 10 of your favourites in last year's honourables....

Here are 5 more avatars worthy of an honorable mention this year.....

"Box Cutters"

Debuted: 3/2/11

Image

When box cutters came up in a topic on the Bored, this avatar of ES and Winnie engaged in a showdown sprang to mind. And what I love most about this avatar is how I pulled it off. I drew the outline of ES, reversed the image, then pasted it in position to be sparring with the original outline... then drew in the rest of the details for both characters (and did this all in plain old Paint, mind you). This just goes to show you that I use the same basic body outline for all of my characters.... I have demonstrated before to a few on this Bored how easy it is for me to draw ES, then change him into MBRS, who I then change into Angel....

"Two To Tango"

Debuted: 4/18/11

Image

An avatar that owes its origin to Snaxx's I've Been Everywhere game, of all places... this sexy dance scene between ES and MBRS never ceases to make me smile. They are so ready for Dancing with the Avatar Stars...

"Supermarket Sweep"

Debuted: 6/8/11

Image

When Esto mentioned that his local Target had an aisle of freezers where the lights would turn on and off as one walked down the aisle, creating a "Billie Jean" effect, I pictured the squirrel pups Blaze and Sulphur breezing down the aisle having fun with it.... just as I had lots of fun going to the grocery store as a kid pushing around the shopping cart and getting stuck in the ice freezer.

"This Bow's For You"

Debuted: 9/12/11

Image

Drawn for Sprots' birthday, this avatar harkens back to the days when my drawing left something to be desired, and I relied more on telling so much with so little. This is a simple drawing with a squirrel, a couple balloons, and a well-placed bow... and yet it tells a story much better than some of this year's more complex avatars. Simplicity is still the foundation of ES's artistic success....

"Planet Possum"

Debuted: 11/10/11

Image

Lizbit's fascination with the "aliens" in her backyard eventually led to this avatar featuring this year's biggest rising star of the ES universe, Buster Possum. Dressed as some combination of Mork, a red shirt ensign, and one of the Wicked Witch's guards, Buster greets the curious Lizbit and states that he comes in peace, and seeks only to be taken to her leader to rummage through her garbage cans....

And now, for the final five honorable mentions......

"Rafferbee Is Smokin'!"

Debuted: 3/25/11

Image

The final in the series of avatars I did for RB's 4-day appearance on Jeopardy back in March. Of course, it's a tribute to zachhoran's infamous "cyberial cigar" schtik, and while there are those who don't appreciate it, I find it amusing and played off of it to celebrate RB's three wins. Each morning after RB won, I changed the amount on the podium to reflect her current winnings.... from $37,601 to $70,002, to her final total of $103,203.

"Combat!"

Debuted: 5/9/11

Image

This was probably the toughest cut for me to make from the countdown, as I was so sure this one would represent the best of the best at the end of the year. Lizbit emerged as a major character in my avatars this year, with her many adventures with her frien ES being the typical theme. This was inspired by Lizbit's desire to become a soldier dog, and shows her and ES in their camo in the heat of battle. Watch out for that suspicious looking helicopter!

"Stop! Thief!"

Debuted: 7/2/11

Image

I had to tell my story about someone sneaking into our store during our lunch hour through a jury-rigged door the construction crew set up, walking clear across the store to the Electronic department, and hauling a big screen TV all the way back across the store and making a clean getaway. Nobody but Buster could represent such a brazen crook like that, and this was Buster's first true appearance in one of my avatars. It was how well he worked and looked in this avatar that led to his use in future avatars.

"The Jazzy Vs. The Rascal"

Debuted: 9/13/11

Image

After Kiki had knee surgery and was whin.... er, letting us know about it, I couldn't help but continue to poke fun at her with this scene of her chasing down ES in her personalized Jazzy threatening the rascally rodent with her cane. One of these days, ES isn't going to escape the wrath of Kiki....

"Heart Shaped Bed"

Debuted: 12/8/11

Image

Yes, even the final avatars of the year are considered for the countdown. This one was incredibly difficult to draw, but the heart shaped bed and the lady of questionable repute occupying it came out quite lovely. Beebs asked for recommendations on a new bed, and ES delivered...

Tomorrow........ the countdown begins with #20!!!

#20: "Bad Hair Hottie"

Debuted: 2/12/11

Image

This avatar was spawned by a chance meeting between christie and Hottie at their local post office. Hottie mentioned that it was one of the worst times to run into someone she knew because she was having a really bad hair day, and was trying to cover it up with a ridiculous looking hat. I saw that when I woke up in the evening, and despite being on my laptop and in chat at the time, felt compelled to draw my version of Hottie's bad hair day. Hottie's character is a favorite of mine to draw anyway, but I really love the way this one came out, and of course, part of the inspiration for this avatar was....

#19: "Erin Got Back!"

Debuted: 10/27/11

Image

When Beebs got chastised for using the word "bubblebutt", one of my favorite insults to sling around, I arose to her defense in a number of ways... and one of them was this avatar featuring the one and only Erin and her amused mother mini. Even more hilarious was that the morning I posted this, mini noted that Erin was in fact singing Baby Got Back before her.... um, unicorn bath. Fat bottomed squirrels and dainty asses make the rockin' world go round....

We had another Unicorn Bath on Sunday--I had used the colored hairspray from the Halloween clearance rack to dye her hair pink and purple for the weekend, because she wanted it that way. When I washed it out, I would squeeze the suds into her hand so she could play with the dyed bubbles, and she was cackling merrily and said; "This is like a birthday present!" Then for no reason she blurted out; "Unicorns!" So I guess that's what she means when she wishes she had a unicorn--something unusual and magical to her.

I just love the little things that amuse kids...

#18: "Blazing Pink"

Debuted: 10/2/11

Image

Me and uly often inspire each other's avatars, and in this instance, I followed his lead. After he posted an avatar of the Song Girls wearing their pink shirts in support of breast cancer, I decided to do my own ES tribute. There were many choices I could have made for who would get to sport the pink shirt, but I chose li'l Blaze because I thought it would look better if the shirt appeared to be oversized for who was wearing it. I added the pink to dark red gradient in the background not realizing at the time how much better it made this picture look. With Blaze's natural colors, it's almost a monochromatic avatar of reddish shades. This avatar not only helped fight breast cancer, but for the first week of October, it was a bright pink beacon on the Bored.

#17: "Run Clem Run!!"

Debuted: 11/4/11

Of all the avatars Sprots campaigned for before the countdown, this is the only one she can proudly claim to have vaulted into the Top 20. As great a feat as that was, it was nothing compared to what the avatar was drawn to celebrate... clem's successful completion of the NYC Marathon. Despite his trademark shoes and the wrong bib number, clem managed to huff and puff his way to the finish line thanks to the bareback riding MBRS and her bullwhip of terror. While that's what made this one great for Sprots, for me it was the addition of the groupies in the corner of the picture.... without whose support, love, and affection we are sure clem would not have persevered....

I like this one due to the complexity and detail.
